Meet Lindsay Corrigan of Kinston, NC (Eastern NC)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Corrigan.

Lindsay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I began to study photography, the primary equipment was still film. I spent hours in the dark room developing and enlarging my own prints in high school in Ohio and college at Malone University. At that point, I was pursuing a career in journalism and began working with the school newspaper as photo editor and eventually editor in chief. I went on to work for a city newspaper in Ohio. I quickly realized that photography was my passion and began to shoot wedding photography in 2006 with a photojournalistic style that was just becoming popular. I began to focus solely on family and commercial portraiture in 2012. I began to specialize in high school senior portraits before graduation.

I have now been in the photography industry for 20 years and have been published for my senior and family portraits and interior design photography in local, state, and international magazines including Domino, Traditional Home, and Senior Style Guide magazine. I have won international awards for senior portrait photography and have acquired my Master Photographer certification for Senior Portraiture from the National Association of Professional Child Photographers. I have also continued work in journalism writing and photographing for the My Lenoir magazine until 2020.

My goal with every session is to capture authentic expression with beautiful light and in a creative yet appealing way. I love working with clients to get to know them before the session so I can help them feel at ease in front of the camera.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I first began offering high school senior portrait services to families, it was not something that was popular in my area. I quickly became recognized for the unique experience I provided and the real smiles I was able to capture from teenagers. That is not always easy! I had to learn to earn the trust of each teen I worked with. I recognized how amazing each individual was and I strived to bring out personality. This was not easy for me because I was the shy kid back in the day when I was in school. But that also helped me have a deeper understanding for many of the teens I worked with.

My business began to get difficult when I began to grow. I wanted to make sure I set boundaries so I did not lose focus on what mattered most to me – my faith and family. I have homeschooled for 12 of the 20 years I’ve been in business. So photography has been a part-time gig for me. But there was one point where it began to take over and it really derailed me. In 2020, I took a step back and really made sure my priorities were in order.

In order to serve as many people as I can, I have learned to streamline, delegate, and say no when I need to. Now, with ai, editing is much less time-consuming, but in the early 2000’s I had to learn how to use and create a workflow to save myself time. I used to be found editing until late at night, but now, my computer is closed by 5:30 each night.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My ability to capture real smiles of children and teens and my lighting style is what I am known for. I love natural light or ambient light. I have studied light for years and I have a passion for using it to make my subjects’ faces, especially eyes, be lit in a beautiful way.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I have been told that my laid-back demeanor allows my clients to feel at ease and comfortable when they are working with me. I am also very diligent to do my best for each client. Even if I’m having a bad day, my main goal is to exceed my clients’ expectations.
