Rising Stars: Meet Velmy Trinidad of Greensboro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Velmy Trinidad.

Hi Velmy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
0My name is Velmy Trinidad it all started in 2019 in Liberty, NC, where I offered Zumba and flamenco classes. The flamenco classes didn’t generate much interest among the public. In Spring 2022, Greensboro Downtown Park gave me the opportunity to offer a Sevillanas dance workshop, which was a success. From there, in the summer of 2022, the Flamenco Dance Program began in Greensboro. We started by offering basic flamenco classes at the Greensboro Cultural Center, and to this day, we continue to offer basic and intermediate flamenco classes, children’s classes, Palos y Passion workshops, Sevillanas workshops, and Pop-up Belly Dance classes. Over the past few years, we have grown significantly and have had the opportunity for all the students in this Flamenco Dance Program to showcase their talent and hard work at festivals such as Folk Fest 2025 and Hope Fest for Hunger for four consecutive years. We have also been able to present at several schools in Guilford County, High Point University, among others.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting from scratch is never an easy path. Many obstacles arise: lack of training, lack of resources. I’m not aware of anyone else offering flamenco in this market before I started. So I’m offering a dance style that many people don’t know anything about. Flamenco isn’t as well-known as ballet or hip-hop. It’s something different and not commercially mainstream. Therefore, I understand that this has been the biggest obstacle.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My job is Fitness Instructor; I teach group classes in gyms. Many people know me as the Zumba instructor.
But my greatest passion is dancing, being on stage, teaching dance, and choreographing for performances. I love seeing dancers fall in love with making others happy through their movements. I’m proud to have given myself the chance to start over, without knowing if it would work, if it would turn out well or not. I think that not giving up has made me stronger in other ways. I’m sure there’s still a lot to build, but there’s no going back now.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe it’s not luck, it’s effort, it’s not giving up, it’s fighting for your dreams, and proving that you can achieve anything you want with hard work and dedication.
