Community Highlights: Meet Chris Ehrenfeld of BOLD Companies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Ehrenfeld.

Hi Chris, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Before I ever framed a house, I understood one thing: real estate is never just about buildings. It is about the life that unfolds inside them.
I grew up in Pittsburgh and graduated from UNC in 1997. From a young age, I was drawn to real estate because I saw what property really represents. It is where families grow. It is where businesses take root. It is where communities form.

I started in construction, framing houses with my brother to raise capital and learn the business from the ground up. That hands-on beginning shaped everything that followed. When you carry lumber and swing a hammer in the heat, you develop respect for process, precision, and accountability. You learn quickly that shortcuts show up later.

From there, I moved into real estate brokerage. I wanted access to information and a deeper understanding of value. Brokerage sharpened my instincts. I learned negotiation, market cycles, risk assessment, and how to guide clients through some of the most significant financial decisions of their lives. Over time, I felt pulled to influence more than just transactions. I wanted to shape the outcome from start to finish. That led me into development and eventually commercial real estate.

What began as a small operation has grown into the BOLD Companies, operating across construction, residential and commercial brokerage, and development. Over the years, we have been involved in billions of dollars of real estate transactions throughout the Triangle. But scale is not what I measure success by.

What I am most proud of is the culture we have built. Long-term relationships. Integrity in how we negotiate. High standards in how we execute. We believe reputation compounds just like capital.

Building businesses taught me leverage, risk, and the power of compounding. Becoming a husband and father taught me perspective. Success means very little if it costs you what matters most. That realization pushed me to think beyond financial returns.

It is also what led me to launch BOLD Wealth (www.bold-wealth.com), a weekly newsletter where I share practical financial principles through the lens of values and fulfillment. Money is important. It creates freedom and opportunity. But wealth, in my view, must extend beyond the balance sheet.

For more than 25 years I have focused on building physical spaces. Today, I am equally committed to helping people build meaningful lives inside those spaces.

Because in the end, the structure is only the beginning. What matters most is what gets built within it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Growing a business from the ground up comes with constant challenges.

Real estate and construction are cyclical. I have built through strong markets and through downturns. When markets tighten, everything tightens. Financing slows, buyers hesitate, projects stall. Those seasons test discipline and long-term thinking.

Earlier in my career, I believed growth solved most problems. What I learned is that growth without structure creates strain. There were seasons when we had to step back, strengthen leadership, and refine our systems before moving forward again.

The hardest lessons have been people lessons. As a company grows, the role shifts from doing to leading. That requires learning how to coach, how to build culture intentionally, and how to make difficult decisions when someone is not the right fit.

There were personal lessons as well. Balancing ambition with presence at home. Recognizing that business success does not automatically translate to life fulfillment.

Looking back, the obstacles were not detours. They were the education that shaped how we build today, with patience, integrity, and a long-term view.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about BOLD Companies?
The BOLD Companies are a vertically integrated real estate platform operating across residential brokerage, commercial brokerage, construction, and development throughout the Triangle.

That integration is intentional. It allows us to see the full lifecycle of real estate, from land acquisition and development to custom home construction and commercial brokerage for growing businesses. Because we operate across disciplines, we understand value from multiple angles.

BOLD Construction specializes in high-end custom homes and luxury renovations. We emphasize communication, process, and craftsmanship that creates raving fans. A large percentage of our work comes from repeat clients and referrals, which speaks to the relationships we have built.

BOLD Real Estate and BOLD Commercial Real Estate help clients make strategic property decisions. We are known for market knowledge, strong negotiation, and a partnership mindset. We think like owners, investors, and builders, not just brokers.
What sets us apart is perspective. We do not chase transactions. We focus on long-term outcomes. After more than 25 years in this market, trust is the asset I value most.

At the end of the day, we help people and businesses create the physical spaces that support their growth and their lives. The buildings matter. The people inside them matter more.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There are many people who deserve credit.

First, my family. My wife has supported the long hours, the risks, and the growth seasons that come with entrepreneurship. My kids remind me daily what the work is for.

My mom also played a major role. I brought her into the real estate business, but long before that I learned how to connect with people by watching her. She had a natural ability to build trust. Bringing her into the company and seeing her thrive was an honor.

My construction partner, Jason Dell, has been my best friend since preschool. More than 45 years. Building a business with someone you trust at that level is rare. His operational leadership and steady discipline have been foundational to our growth.
And then there is our team. Across construction, brokerage, and development, we have talented professionals who care deeply about excellence. No company scales because of one person.

If there is one theme, it is this: nothing meaningful is built alone. I am grateful for the people who have built alongside me.
