Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Judd.
Hi Abby, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our journey started in November of 2024 with a shared love of service and a mission to support and uplift the women in our community. What we found was that while services existed in North Carolina, there appeared to be a large gap in southern Wake County. Instead of accepting it for what it was, we felt called to respond with the creation of Her Power Project. Our mission is to bring awareness to period poverty by providing free menstrual hygiene supplies to those who need them in our community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While this journey has been very rewarding, it has not been without challenges. Coming from a background in education, we did not go into this with a lot of formal experience in business, specifically the nonprofit business world. For us, the beginning consisted of hours of work dedicated to learning how to start and run a nonprofit in North Carolina. We spent months researching how to register as a 501.c.3, how to maintain compliance, and how to legally accept donations. For a long time it felt like for every step we took, we went 3 steps back. There were moments along the way where people did not support or understand the need for our mission. Even throughout all of the complications, we have been very fortunate to receive immense support from our friends, family, and the community as a whole. We are deeply grateful to have such a strong network of mentors and supporters who continue to stand with us every step of the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Her Power Project?
Her Power Project is a local nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness for period poverty in North Carolina by expanding access to menstrual products, education, and support. We believe period care is a basic human need and that every person deserves access to menstrual products without shame or judgment. Our work is centered around dignity, and it guides every choice we make and every initiative we take. Whether we are distributing supplies, sharing stories, or advocating for systemic change, we are leading with compassion and care. Our overall goal is to meet an immediate need, but we cannot do that without first changing the conversation and fostering a culture where menstrual health concerns are met with support and dignity.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to Her Power Project is creating meaningful and sustainable change within the communities we serve. Our work goes beyond providing necessary menstrual hygiene products. Our mission is rooted in a commitment to equity and empowerment. While we aim to reduce the prevalence of period poverty, we understand that there are barriers in place that perpetuate stigma and reduce overall awareness. For that reason, we are dedicated to serving with compassion and care.
