Daily Inspiration: Meet Marlon Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlon Richardson.

Hi Marlon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Back in 2021 I got involved in the local car community scene and was gifted a cheap Canon camera to take photos of the group. I always loved classic and foreign import cars so I fell in love with capturing all types early on. Having a camera in my hand felt almost natural considering I had done a small amount of modeling myself years before with other friends & photographers. But due to the car scene being already small in the city I grew bored of shooting only cars. I started to venture more into meeting new people and taking portraits of them as a way of not only challenging my artistic capabilities but also as way to introduce people to the world and tell their stories in the process. 2023 would be the year I consider I started to take my photography more serious and get more involved with being a stylist , creative director in addition to being the photographer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey or road hasn’t always been smooth as much as much as I’d like it to be however overcoming every day life struggles as a adult & parent and overcoming depression has allowed me to appreciate everything as a lesson and turn it into an opportunity to better myself individually. Burnout as a creative was definitely one of my struggles in the past due to always trying to show the world & audience something new or familiar in a my own perspective.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a self taught photographer shooting digital and film. I would have to say I’m known for the nostalgic look and feel my photos give off to the audience. I’m most proud whenever my work helps give people a confidence boost or it helps them remember a good memory or milestone in their life. I would say what sets me apart from others is the fact I don’t allow myself to be placed in a box by others regardless of criticism or opinion. I enjoy capturing everything going on around me whether it’s intimate & intentional or if it’s random and out of the norm of what I usually capture with my lenses.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me in life aside from being a father is simply being a creative & photographer people feel comfortable around -they can talk to and converse about any & everything without feeling too judged. Although we are living in a wild crazy time I still believe everybody deserves to have their voices heard or deserve to be seen. Every time I take a photo of somebody I treat it as if it’s their introduction to the billions of strangers on this planet as a way of saying “hi nice to meet you; I am_____”
