Daily Inspiration: Meet Rukiya Shanteel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rukiya Shanteel.

Hi Rukiya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been in love with art since since I could pick up a crayon. I can remember in first grade I was writing short stories and drawing crazy little characters. My teacher had called to have my mom come in to see what I was creating to tell her she had a writer in her hands. Then a few years later I had my 4th grade teacher telling me I was not drawing my homework assignments an adult was. So that was discouraging to say the least and I put art to the side and focused on basketball. I loved that game but I also recognized it was merely another form of art. Bc it was not just about getting the ball to the goal it was how you crafted the lines to get to reach it. Oh yeah and television raised me so naturally I wanted to create something for that space. I’m one of those people that cry during movie trailers. And I make weird short films, next year I’ve devices to enter for festivals and commit to a full feature project. I studied graphic design at GTCC and took a few online courses at SCAD. Today I started to work on my first mural with some cool new art friends and I’ve been blessed to sale some art to some cool talented people. One of my favorite pieces I sold last year to Deena Porter from True Blood Series. And my biggest accomplishment in art so far has been me being finding the courage to communicate my emotions via art. It’s tough being venerable.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles are the gray areas that can create movement for progress. So yes I struggled to find my voice, and believing in my inner. The inner self creates the outer art. Not studying trends and patterns. To know all that everything is encoded on our souls, and no one can copy that.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Specialize in fine art /street hybrids on canvas and wood. I’m most proud of my clothing collection “they can’t copy you soul”

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck is someone not doing a damn thing and magic happens. Luck to me is about preparing and putting in the work so when the moment comes it’s was already made for you. So i have been prepared and not prepared. It took the one time not being prepared to shape who I am today. Life is what you make it for real, just gotta put in the work.
