Community Highlights: Meet Thana Lucksanapirak of Shijiri Sushi Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thana Lucksanapirak.

Hi Thana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In late 2024, we’ve moved from Thailand to Cary, North Carolina. We never thought we would be restaurant owners but we met Chef John who helped and still is, leading our kitchen. At first we thought to do the “normal” sushi spot. Tips, Rolls, and a lot of sauces. However we said to ourselves, why are we doing this? We had no good answer just we wanted to survive in the area. That was a bad answer, So we set to break the norm because why not? No tips, No rolls, No overwhelming sauces.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth at all really, We struggled on employment, developing menus, and really the biggest challenge was not the restaurant it self it’s the family. Working almost everyday to keep things smooth has been demanding for all of us.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Landing in Cary was, without exaggeration, the hardest and most exhilarating experience we have ever shared. There is a specific kind of vertigo that comes with arriving in a new country. Every task, from setting up a household to navigating the local grocery store, felt like a mountain to climb. We were tired, often uncertain, and deeply aware of how far we were from the soil that raised us.

“The hardest things in life are often the ones that require the most profound reinvention of oneself.”

We are most proud of how our space has evolved from a daring personal gamble into a warm community staple. Above all, we want our guests to know that every dish we serve is a reflection of our journey, built on resilience, tradition, and a deep, enduring respect for the craft of Japanese cooking.
