Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernice Isley.
Hi Bernice, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey with photography actually began when I was just 10 years old. I’ve always been captivated by the power of a single image to freeze time. What started as a childhood passion eventually evolved into a professional career that has spanned the last decade. After moving to the beautiful city of Raleigh, North Carolina, I realized my true calling was in the world of newborn and maternity photography.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve worked to refine a style that blends high-end artistry with the raw, emotional “personality” of a growing family. I realized early on that for many new parents, the traditional studio experience could be overwhelming. This led me to develop my Luxury Traveling Studio, where I bring a full professional setup. I bring custom backdrops to specialized newborn props directly to my clients’ homes in Raleigh, Wake Forest, Cary and the surrounding areas.
Today, I am incredibly honored to be the #1 rated photography business in Northeast Raleigh and was recently voted Best of NC 2026 for Maternity & Newborn Photographers. I am grateful for all of my clients that have helped me get this far. I could never do this without them
As a mother of three myself, I understand that these sessions aren’t just about the “perfect pose.” They are about capturing the joy of a 4-year-old sibling meeting their new baby or the quiet strength of a mother-to-be. My goal remains the same as it was when I started: providing a patient, safe, and boutique experience that celebrates the beautiful “mess” of family life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think any business owner who has been in the industry for 10 years would say it’s been a perfectly smooth road! While my passion for photography has never wavered since I was a child, the path to becoming the #1 rated business in Northeast Raleigh involved navigating some very significant hurdles.
Like many small businesses in Raleigh, the pandemic was a major turning point. For a newborn photographer, my entire model is built on safety and physical closeness. When the world shut down, I had to completely reimagine how to serve my clients.
COVID-19 actually accelerated my transition into a Luxury Traveling Studio. I realized that bringing the studio to the client’s home wasn’t just a luxury, it was a way to provide a controlled, safe, and stress-free environment for vulnerable newborns.
Beyond the pandemic, the biggest struggle has been staying ahead of a rapidly changing digital landscape.
As the Raleigh and Wake Forest markets became more saturated, I had to dive deep into SEO and digital marketing to ensure families could actually find me.
During lean economic times, photography is often viewed as a “luxury.” I have to prove to my community that these aren’t just photos. I focus on quality over quantity.
These struggles weren’t just obstacles; they were the building blocks for what Mess of a Dreamer is today. Being voted Best of NC 2026 is so meaningful because it represents a decade of choosing to grow, adapt, and show up for my clients, no matter what the world threw my way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional newborn and maternity photographer with 10 years of experience in the industry. My work specializes in capturing the delicate transition into motherhood and those early days of a newborn’s life. While I maintain a studio in Northeast Raleigh, I also specialize in a Luxury Traveling Studio model, bringing a full-service professional photography experience directly to my clients’ homes.
In the Raleigh community, I’ve become known for my patient, baby-led approach and my technical artistry. Clients often recognize my work by its “artsy,” edited aesthetic. Whether it’s smoothing a background or perfecting the lighting on a maternity gown, my focus is always on creating a polished, heirloom-quality image.
I am incredibly proud of reaching my 10 year anniversary in this business while maintaining the #1 ranking for photography in Northeast Raleigh. However, the crowning achievement of my career so far was being voted Best of NC 2026 for Maternity & Newborn Photographers. This award is a reflection of the trust and relationships I’ve built with hundreds of local families over the last decade. On a personal level, I am proud of balancing this growing business while raising my three children with my husband, Ryan.
What truly sets me apart is the combination of convenience and high-end artistry.
The In-Home Experience: I remove the stress of the newborn phase by traveling to my clients in Raleigh, Wake Forest, and Cary with all the professional equipment, wraps, and props they need.
A Decade of Technical Skill: With 10 years in the industry, I have the expertise to handle complex newborn posing, like the “froggy pose” and sibling portraits with patience and safety as the top priority.
Boutique Customization: I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every session is tailored, from the “personality” shots of a 4-year-old sibling to the custom textured maternity backgrounds.
What matters most to you?
At the end of the day, what matters to me most isn’t the awards or the rankings. It’s client satisfaction and the way I treat every person who steps in front of my lens. Photography is an incredibly intimate profession; I am often the first person outside of the immediate family to hold a newborn or the one capturing a mother’s quiet strength before her world changes forever. Because of that, the experience my clients have is just as important to me as the final gallery.
I’ve built my reputation over the last 10 years on being patient. Whether I’m working with a fussy baby or an energetic sibling, I believe every family deserves a stress-free environment where they feel seen and respected.
As a mother of three and a resident of Raleigh for many years, I view my clients as my neighbors. I treat every family with the same care, safety, and kindness that I would want for my own children.
I know that the photos I take today will be the ones families look back on for decades. Knowing that a client is truly happy with how they were treated and how they look in their portraits, is the ultimate measure of my success.
I want my clients to walk away from a session feeling like they were supported and cared for. Being named Best of NC 2026 is an incredible honor, but knowing that I’ve made a new mom feel beautiful or captured the “personality” of a shy toddler is what keeps me passionate about this work after a decade in the industry.
