Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Middleton.
Hi Maurice, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey started with a simple love for dogs and a desire to create a safe, peaceful space for them. Before I ever had a facility, I started my business right from my home. I would care for dogs for friends, family, and referrals, making sure they felt comfortable, loved, and at ease while their owners were away. What began as something small quickly grew through word of mouth because people saw the care and attention I gave to every pet.
After running the business from home for a couple of years, the demand became greater than the space I had. That’s when I took a leap of faith and opened Sit & Stay Doggy Care & Resort—a full-service facility designed to be a true “home away from home” for pets. Today, we offer daycare, overnight boarding, grooming, and a safe indoor play environment where dogs can socialize and thrive.
The journey hasn’t been without challenges, but every step has been worth it. I’ve been blessed to build relationships with amazing clients, grow a dedicated team, and create a business that not only serves pets but supports the community as well. What started in my home has now become a trusted place where families know their pets are cared for like our own—and that’s something I take pride in every single day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped shape the business into what it is today. One of the biggest struggles early on was marketing and simply getting the word out. Starting from home, I didn’t have a big brand or visibility, so I had to rely heavily on word of mouth, social media, and building trust one client at a time.
As the business grew, another challenge was building and maintaining a solid team. Finding people who not only love dogs but also understand the level of care and responsibility this work requires hasn’t always been easy. Training, communication, and creating a strong culture has been a continuous process.
And of course, there are the financial pressures—keeping up with bills, overhead, and expenses that come with running a full facility. From rent to utilities to supplies, those responsibilities don’t stop, even on slow days.
But through it all, those struggles taught me consistency, faith, and resilience. They pushed me to grow not just as a business owner, but as a leader. And now, I’m able to look back and see how every obstacle played a part in building something meaningful for both pets and their families.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the owner of Sit & Stay Doggy Care & Resort in High Point, North Carolina, where we provide daycare, overnight boarding, grooming, individual playtime, and dog birthday parties. What started as caring for dogs in my home has grown into a full-service facility designed to be a true “home away from home” for pets.
We specialize in personalized care and creating a calm, loving environment for every dog that comes through our doors. We offer private suites with TVs, play classical music to help create a peaceful atmosphere, and make sure pets receive individual attention and playtime based on their needs and personalities.
What we’re most known for is the level of care and comfort we provide. We don’t just watch dogs—we build relationships with pets and their owners. I’m most proud of building a trusted business from the ground up and seeing the impact it has had on families throughout the community.
What sets us apart is our personal touch, attention to detail, and genuine love for animals. Every pet is treated like family, and that’s something our clients truly appreciate.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along this journey is the importance of consistency, faith, and treating people well. Building a business takes patience, sacrifice, and resilience, especially during difficult seasons when things may not go as planned.
I’ve also learned that relationships matter just as much as the services you provide. When people know you genuinely care about them and their pets, they remember that. Staying committed, continuing to grow, and not giving up even during challenges has been one of the biggest lessons and blessings of this journey.
