Community Highlights: Meet Elena Williamson of ElenaGW Skin Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elena Williamson.

Hi Elena, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Elena, I am a licensed esthetician in Raleigh, and my journey into esthetics started from a very personal place. I have always been drawn to skincare, wellness, and helping people feel more confident, but my path to building my business was far from simple.

I originally became licensed in Ukraine, where I built my foundation in skincare and facial treatments. Around that time, my life unexpectedly changed direction. In 2014, I came to New York City to visit my girlfriend and ended up staying to study English at a community college. While I was there, I met someone from Raleigh, North Carolina, and what started as a connection slowly changed the course of my life.

For a long time, we were in a long-distance relationship, with romantic flights back and forth between New York and Raleigh. During that period, my plans to return to Ukraine slowly faded, and I began building a new life in the United States.

Eventually, I moved to Raleigh permanently and decided to continue pursuing my passion for esthetics professionally in North Carolina. I attended Miller-Motte College in Cary, where I completed my esthetics education again in order to become licensed in the U.S. Starting over in a new country, language, and professional system was both exciting and challenging, but it pushed me to grow in ways I never expected.

Building a solo business independently has not been easy. There were moments filled with uncertainty, financial pressure, and self-doubt, but those experiences shaped who I am today. They taught me resilience, empathy, and how important it is to create a space where people feel genuinely cared for.

Over the years, I continued investing into advanced education through certifications in chemical peels, hydrodermabrasion, microneedling, and oncology-safe skincare treatments. Today, I operate my own salon suite in Raleigh, where I focus on customized facial treatments designed to support healthy skin, barrier repair, and graceful aging.

I’m also a wife and a mother, and those roles have deeply shaped the way I care for people. They taught me patience, compassion, balance, and the importance of creating moments of calm and self-care in busy lives.

I’m especially passionate about serving this wonderful community and helping every woman — at every stage of life — feel confident, relaxed, cared for, and beautiful. For me, skincare is not only about appearance, but also about emotional well-being, self-care, and creating a moment where clients can truly reconnect with themselves.

What makes this journey meaningful to me is not only building a business, but building a life through courage, reinvention, and persistence. I’m incredibly grateful for every client who trusts me with their skin journey, and I’m excited for what the future holds.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was starting over in a new country while trying to rebuild both my personal life and professional career at the same time. Moving from Ukraine to the United States meant adapting to a different culture, language, education system, and business environment, which could feel overwhelming at times.

I was 33 years old when I moved, and I had already built something for myself in my home country. Starting over from the beginning at that stage of life was emotionally difficult. I had to leave behind familiarity, professional confidence, friendships, and the future I originally imagined for myself. There were moments when I questioned whether I was making the right decisions or whether I would truly be able to rebuild my life and career again.

Professionally, becoming licensed again in North Carolina required time, financial sacrifice, and persistence. Building a solo esthetics business from the ground up is also very different from simply loving skincare. You become responsible for everything — education, marketing, finances, scheduling, customer service, and constantly finding ways to grow while staying true to yourself.

As a wife and mother, balancing family life with entrepreneurship has also been a challenge. There were periods where I felt stretched emotionally and physically, trying to give my best both to my family and to my clients.

But looking back, I truly believe those struggles shaped me into a stronger and more compassionate person. They taught me resilience, patience, adaptability, and empathy — qualities that now influence the way I care for my clients every day. I think overcoming difficult moments has also helped me create a space where people feel genuinely supported, understood, and cared for, not just treated.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about ElenaGW Skin Studio?
I am the owner of Elena Skin Studio, a private esthetics studio in Raleigh focused on customized skincare treatments that combine relaxation, skin health, and results-driven care. My approach is very personalized because I truly believe that every client’s skin and life story are different, so treatments should never feel “one size fits all.”

I specialize in customized facials, barrier repair treatments, healthy aging support, and sensitive skin treatments. I’ve also continued expanding my education in oncology-safe esthetics because I’m passionate about creating treatments that are both effective and gentle.

What sets me apart is the level of care and attention I give to every client experience. As a solo esthetician, I personally perform every treatment and take time to truly listen to my clients’ concerns, lifestyle, stress levels, and skin goals. I want people to feel comfortable, safe, and genuinely cared for from the moment they walk in.

I’m especially passionate about helping women through different stages of life — whether they are dealing with stress, hormonal changes, sensitivity, dryness, acne, or simply wanting to reconnect with themselves through self-care. For me, skincare is deeply connected to confidence and emotional well-being, not just appearance.

My business is also very community-driven. I love building real relationships with my clients and creating a welcoming environment where people feel supported, relaxed, and understood. I truly value the trust my clients place in me, and I want my studio to feel like a calm, positive space within the community.

Another part of my brand that makes me unique is my interest in combining different skincare philosophies and technologies from around the world. I work with professional European, Korean, and American skincare products and treatment approaches, allowing me to customize treatments in a very thoughtful and creative way based on each client’s skin needs.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of creating a business that feels personal, warm, and trustworthy. My goal was never to create a large “factory-style” spa experience. I wanted to build a calm and welcoming environment where clients feel seen as individuals and where treatments are thoughtfully customized for their skin’s real needs.

I also take pride in constantly continuing my education and staying current with modern skincare techniques, ingredients, and treatment approaches. I genuinely love learning and bringing new knowledge back to my clients in a way that feels approachable and supportive.

What I want readers to know most is that my business was built through passion, resilience, and genuine care for people. Every client who supports my studio becomes part of a journey that means a lot to me personally, and I’m incredibly grateful to continue growing within the Raleigh community.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always very creative, caring, and curious. I loved beauty, fashion, skincare, and creating beautiful environments around me, but I was also very interested in education and personal growth.

I grew up in Ukraine and was the younger sister in my family. When I was 16 years old, my father passed away after an illness, which was a very difficult experience for our family. After that, I grew up mostly in a women-led household, surrounded by strong women, and I think that environment shaped me deeply. It made me appreciate femininity, beauty, self-care, resilience, and emotional connection on a much deeper level.

Even as a child, I was drawn to the beauty industry. I still vividly remember being in elementary school and drawing a picture of myself standing next to a retail makeup stand. It’s funny to look back now and realize that even then, I already imagined myself working in the beauty world in some way. I always loved skincare, beauty products, beauty rituals, and the idea of helping women feel confident and beautiful.

My first education was actually completely different from esthetics — I earned a Master’s degree in Economic Education in Ukraine. After graduation, I worked in an office environment for some time, but deep inside I realized something was missing. I understood that I needed creativity and passion in my life, not only structure and routine. That realization led me back to what I truly loved, and I decided to go back to college to study esthetics.

That decision completely changed my life. I discovered how much I loved helping people feel confident, relaxed, and cared for through skincare and self-care.

Later, after moving to the United States, I realized that the esthetics industry and education system here were very different from what I had experienced in Ukraine. I wanted to fully understand the American approach to esthetics and continue growing professionally, so I attended Miller-Motte College in Cary, North Carolina, to complete my esthetics education again and become licensed in the U.S.

Looking back, I think all of those experiences shaped who I am today. My educational background gave me discipline and professionalism, while esthetics gave me creativity, purpose, and human connection. I still consider myself someone who is hardworking, emotional, empathetic, and passionate about helping others feel their best.
