Conversations with Chris Gristle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Gristle.

Hi Chris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Charismatic yet no nonsense rapper Chris Gristle (fka Imthefatboy) is a creative soul that has loved hip hop since the 90s, and an inquiring mind that has studied the music business independently for decades.

Returning to the core foundations of 1980’s-2000’s working class hip hop, Chris Gristle presents gritty raps and age appropriate subject matter, such as growing older, surviving homelessness, escaping drug dealer days, and being a single father, over soulful, hard-hitting production.

Chris Gristle began his life long love of hip hop at just 10 years old the summer he saw the music video for “Hypnotize” by the Notorious B.I.G. “It was the first time I saw someone who looked like ME as a superstar” – Chris Gristle

However, it would be life events such as losing his virginity at an early age and a lack of people to talk to that would encourage Chris to turn to the pen and pad for expression.

At 12 he would skip class to study music business in the school library. At fourteen he would make his own beats on the PlayStation before digital music was popular, and by 16 he would be on stage for the first time ever!

Since then Chris Gristle has come a long way and turned his years of knowledge into services and opportunities, including online and real world events to help artists who are coming up like he was and connect real people directly to good hip hop music

If you can relate to quietly building something from nothing, with hip hop as your sound track during lunch breaks and after bedtimes then we welcome you

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely been a bumpy road as I’ve faced everything from tough crowds and figuring out my style to real homelessness and figuring out my LIFE. All while being a devoted parent and pursuing a dream I began in elementary school

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Simply put I love to rap. Someone said “rappers try to be so tough but really they’re just word nerds”. . .and by George I think we’ve been found out. I love the vocabulary of it all the wit and sharpness. The literary exercises.

However beyond that I believe I specialize in connecting people. Not just connecting them to me and my music but connecting them to each other and more importantly to themselves. It’s part of why I chose “Gristle” because it’s connective tissue

What matters most to you?
Human authenticity. Because its becoming increasingly rare in this world. People being themselves without dreading what others will think. People just being people without trying to please and algorithm or chat bot. Meeting in person, belly laughing out loud, sobbing until your nose runs, dancing until your knees hurt, and saving it all for the sheer memory of it. I wish ppl could just be real again
