Community Highlights: Meet Alvely Alcantara of Rooted Healing Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alvely Alcantara.

Hi Alvely, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was 6 years old when I migrated to the U.S., and I was used to challenges in life. Becoming a therapist in private practice was another challenge I knew I could get through. And it was one that started early in my life. I married my high school sweetheart when I was 19 years old, and I moved to Fort Bragg, NC, from New York City, after he joined the Army. This was such a culture shock to me! I did not even know how to drive, as I did not need to in NYC. Soon after we arrived at Fort Bragg, my husband deployed to Afghanistan, and I was left to figure things out as best as I could. My mental health was greatly impacted as I had no family nearby and did not know anyone. I had no support system. I was experiencing anxiety, depression, and panic attacks. My mental health challenges led me to read the book ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ by Viktor Frankl, and it changed my life. I re-enrolled in college (I completed my first year in NYC before moving to NC), and instead of pursuing journalism as I initially intended, I switched to psychology. I wanted to understand everything about human behavior, resiliency, and suffering.

This led to such deep awareness of my own life and patterns and understanding of family dynamics. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. I completed my Master’s in Social Work with a concentration in mental health and a sub-concentration in military social work. While in graduate school, I was often placed in internships that required me to work with the Latinx community since Spanish is my first language. I thought I wanted to work with the military community, but my time in graduate school showed me that I was more passionate about mental health in the Latinx community. Today, I am in private practice and specialize in providing mental health care to the Latinx community, and it is truly a calling that I am so passionate about.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being in private practice and running my own business has not been a smooth road at all. I had to teach myself everything I know, as we aren’t taught how to be business owners in graduate school. I can sit with people of all walks of life, and witness them, listen to them, and create a space for healing, but running a business without any guidance has been so much harder. I have had to go through the stress of figuring things out, of feeling alone while doing it, of managing the time-consuming administrative tasks, and of paying for the things that keep my business going. The worst parts have been the self-doubts and insecurities that creep in.

In 2021, I became a first-time mom to twin boys, and I chose to prioritize motherhood while putting my business on the side. I am now returning to it full force after learning so much more about myself through my motherhood experience. Motherhood has been another challenge but one that has taught me the most about myself and the world. Motherhood has been a sacred transformative experience and I embrace every part of it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
This is a hard one to reflect on because there is so much that matters to me, but I will say that I care deepy about being intentional in the spaces I create, and how I show up in the world. What matters most to me is creating spaces where people feel seen, safe, valued, and deeply cared for. I value genuine connection, community, and intentionality in both my personal and professional life. As a mother, wife, friend, therapist and community member, I care deeply about supporting healing, emotional wellbeing, and belonging, especially for women, families, and communities of color. I believe in showing up with authenticity, compassion, and presence, and I strive to create experiences that help people feel appreciated, supported, and less alone. At the center of everything I do is a desire to nurture meaningful relationships, care for my family and community, and help others move from survival into healing, self-compassion and connection.
