Today we’d like to introduce you to Huijin Oh.
Hi Huijin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first met my husband, Soobok Jeong, in Raleigh in 2007 while working at a Taekwondo school which was right after we moved from South Korea. He was a kind and shy business guy, and I was wild martial artist. We later moved to Northern Virginia in 2012 and got married, and our differences are a big support in our relationship because they help us grow both in our personal and work lives. We always knew we wanted to open our own Taekwondo school, so in 2016 we moved to Durham and began working at a local Taekwondo school. In 2019, we had the opportunity to take it over and make it our own. We have since expanded our family with our daughter, Sia, who was born in 2021.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle so far has been having to adjust the way we would teach classes during Covid from teaching only on Zoom, to half Zoom and half in person, to fully back in person. We got very lucky because we had great instructors to help us by the time Covid hit. We were all able to work together and adapt to the changes in teaching during the different phases of Covid.
I think we see life in a very similar way. We focus on doing what’s best instead of wasting time debating every option. Looking back, some moments were probably harder than we realized at the time. But we always tried to stay positive and keep moving forward, because we both know struggles can consume you if you let them.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We have always believed in hard work, discipline, and creating opportunities for others. That shared belief became the foundation of everything we built together.
Even three years before opening our own studio, we already knew what we wanted to create. We chose the name “Modu Martial Arts” long before the doors opened. “Modu” is a traditional Korean word meaning “everyone, everything, and together.” That word captured our dream perfectly:
– a place where everyone feels included like family
– a place where students learn everything about traditional Taekwondo
– a place where we grow stronger together—physically, mentally, and as a community
Becoming owners was not easy. Every step came with challenges, responsibilities, and lessons we had to learn quickly. But each challenge also made us better—better leaders, better teachers, and better people for the families who trusted us with their children.
Today, Modu Martial Arts is more than a school. It is the result of years of shared effort, shared values, and shared dreams. It is our way of giving back to the community that has supported us, and of creating a place where everyone can grow together. Modu Martial Arts is a Taekwondo school, a summer camp, and an afterschool care program. Our school community has led to great opportunities for our demo team that include performances at school evets, fundraising activities, and birthday parties.
What matters most to you? Why?
We want to build a place where everyone feels included, and a place that welcome them and knows them, so that they can trust us in their learning. This is a place to grow and gain confidence and strength for all of our students and staff.
Some important phrases that come to mind are:
– Do not give up
– Try, fail, and get back up and try again
– Learn to respect yourself by challenging and earn the belt
– Be a safe place for our students/staff
– Another chance to everyone
– Be a helper
