Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From the time I was young, books were more than just stories or required schoolwork, they were comfort, adventure, and home. A lifelong reader, I have always found solace between the pages of a good book.
As a Physician Assistant serving patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, the days were often exhausting and emotionally heavy, and after long shifts in the clinic, I would come home and disappear into books as a way to escape and recharge. Reading became not only a passion, but a source of coping.
What began as a small pop-up mobile bookshop eventually grew into a dream come true: a mobile book bus! Inspired by my own experiences and love of finding refuge in books, the goal was to bring a cozy and inclusive space directly to readers where they could slow down, connect, and share their love of reading with like-minded souls.
Tilly and her Traveling Tales, is more than just a mobile bookstore, it is a reflection of values I hold dear: connection, imagination, and belonging. Whether meeting readers at local markets, community events, or unique coffee shops along the way, I hope every person who steps inside feels welcomed and at home.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Owning a mobile bookshop has been a labor of love, but it has also come with challenges that many people never see behind the decorative shelves and cozy atmosphere. Building the business from the ground up required long hours, financial sacrifice, constant planning, and the courage to pursue an unconventional dream. From unpredictable weather and event cancellations, inventory costs, and the physical demands of traveling and setting up, there have been moments of exhaustion and uncertainty. Balancing life as a physician assistant, wife, horse and dog mom while growing a small business often meant sacrificing rest and a lot of personal time to keep the dream alive. This dream could not have been possible without the unwavering support of my husband Steven, my parents, dear friends, and the readers who continue to show up and support the bookshop!

Our mobile bookshop was created for readers who believe books are more than entertainment; they are connection, comfort, and a means of escape. Specializing in romance, fantasy, romantasy, thrillers, and historical fiction, every title on our shelves is carefully curated and hand selected with intention. As a passionate reader, we take pride in truly knowing the books we carry, allowing us to offer thoughtful and educated recommendations tailored to each customer’s interests and reading style. More than just a mobile bookstore, we strive to create an experience built on meaningful conversations, shared stories, and a genuine love of reading
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What we love most about New Bern is the sense of community and small town charm that makes it feel both welcoming and deeply connected. From the beautiful historic downtown and waterfront views to the locally owned shops, coffee spots, and small businesses, there is such a welcoming warmth here. New Bern is a place where people genuinely support one another and where community events bring people together in meaningful ways. We love being surrounded by fellow small business owners, passionate readers, and kindhearted locals.
