Community Highlights: Meet Kecia Purser of The Head Spa Sanctuary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kecia Purser.

Hi Kecia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m the founder and CEO of The Head Spa Sanctuary, a luxury wellness destination based in Pineville, North Carolina, specializing in Japanese Head Spa experiences, scalp health, holistic wellness, massage, facials, and immersive self-care rituals.

My journey into this industry really came from a deep passion for creating experiences that make people feel genuinely cared for. I’m originally from Bedford, Virginia, and long before opening the spa, I spent years in corporate leadership roles where I learned a tremendous amount about operations, customer experience, systems, and team development. While I’m incredibly grateful for that chapter, I always felt called to build something more personal, meaningful, and healing.

What started as a vision for a Japanese Head Spa quickly grew into something much larger. At the time, very few people in our area even knew what a head spa was. I became obsessed with studying scalp health, wellness rituals, sensory experiences, and how to combine luxury with genuine care. I wanted to create a space that felt different from the moment someone walked through the doors — not just another spa appointment, but an experience where people could truly pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves.

When we opened The Head Spa Sanctuary the response was overwhelming in the best way. We grew incredibly quickly, and today we’ve become one of the busiest Japanese Head Spas in the world, welcoming guests from all over the country. What’s been most rewarding is seeing how much people crave intentional wellness experiences and human connection.

As we’ve grown, so has the vision. We’ve expanded beyond head spa services into Massage Therapy, Zero Gravity Manicures & Pedicures, Korean facials, Botanical foot soaks, Multi-hand wellness experiences, and holistic offerings rooted in clean, conscious care. Every detail of the business — from the herbal teas we serve to the flowers placed in our rooms — is designed with intention.

I’m also a wife and mom of two, and balancing entrepreneurship with motherhood has been one of the most challenging and rewarding parts of this journey. Building this company has required a lot of faith, resilience, creativity, and long hours, but it’s also shown me the power of trusting your vision even when it feels unconventional.

At the heart of it all, my goal has always remained the same: to create a sanctuary where people feel restored, seen, and genuinely cared for.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and honestly, I think that’s been one of the biggest reasons we’ve grown so much. Every stage of growth has required us to evolve very quickly.

One of our biggest challenges has been space. We started in what was essentially a studio-style environment, and the response to our concept happened much faster than we anticipated. We went from having room to breathe to suddenly trying to operate one of the busiest wellness businesses in the country within a space that was never designed for that level of demand. We’ve had to become incredibly creative with flow, scheduling, room usage, staffing, storage, and guest experience while still maintaining the feeling of calm and luxury people come to us for.

Balancing demand with physical space constraints has been challenging because growth is exciting, but it also creates pressure. There are moments where you realize your business has outgrown the systems, layout, or structure you originally built. We’re currently navigating what expansion looks like while also being mindful and strategic about long-term decisions.

Another major learning experience has been team growth and culture. We went from a very small, close-knit team of about five people to more than fifty employees in a relatively short period of time. The culture naturally changes as you grow, and maintaining the heart of the company while scaling has taken a tremendous amount of intentionality.

In the beginning, leadership was very informal because everyone wore multiple hats. Some people who were incredible leaders in a small startup environment struggled as the company evolved into a much larger organization with more structure, accountability, and operational complexity. That was difficult emotionally because there’s a lot of loyalty and gratitude attached to the people who helped build the foundation. But one of the hardest lessons in entrepreneurship is realizing that the leadership needed for one stage of business may not always be the leadership needed for the next.

I’ve also learned that growth exposes every weakness in your systems very quickly. Communication, training, scheduling, onboarding, management structure, and operational consistency all become exponentially more important as the team grows. We’ve had to build processes almost as quickly as we were growing.

At the same time, those challenges have shaped us into what we are today. They forced us to become more intentional, more organized, and more focused on building a company that can scale without losing the warmth and care that made people fall in love with us in the first place.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Head Spa Sanctuary. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Head Spa Sanctuary is a luxury wellness sanctuary in Pineville, North Carolina, centered around Japanese Head Spa experiences, scalp health, holistic wellness, and deeply immersive self-care rituals. While many people initially discover us for our Japanese Head Spa services, what we’ve truly built is an experience-driven wellness brand focused on helping people slow down, reconnect, and feel genuinely cared for.

We specialize in authentic Japanese-inspired head spa treatments that combine scalp analysis, therapeutic water therapy, relaxation techniques, scalp-focused care, massage, and sensory wellness experiences. Over time, we’ve expanded into Massage Therapy, Zero Gravity Manicures & Pedicures, Korean-inspired facials, Botanical foot soaks, Multi-hand wellness experiences and holistic wellness offerings designed to care for the mind and body together rather than treating beauty and wellness as separate things.

One of the things that sets us apart most is how intentional every detail is. From the lighting and music to the herbal teas, fresh flowers, aromatherapy, scalp consultations, and even the way services are choreographed — everything is designed to create an emotional experience, not just a service appointment. We always say we are in the business of how people feel.

We are also deeply committed to clean, conscious care. We carefully select products and ingredients that align with our philosophy of wellness without compromise, and many of our offerings incorporate botanicals, herbal preparations, and holistic approaches that support both relaxation and overall wellbeing.

Another thing that makes our brand unique is the way we blend luxury with warmth. We never wanted the spa to feel intimidating or transactional. We wanted it to feel elevated, but also deeply human. Our guests often tell us they feel like they’re walking into a sanctuary rather than a business, and honestly, that’s one of the greatest compliments we could receive.

Brand-wise, I’m probably most proud of the culture and emotional connection we’ve created. We’ve built a brand that people genuinely connect with and talk about long after they leave. Many of our guests travel from across the country to visit us, and seeing something that started as a vision become a destination people seek out has been incredibly rewarding.

I also take a lot of pride in the fact that we’ve helped introduce and elevate Japanese Head Spa experiences in our region while creating opportunities for education, career growth, and wellness-focused experiences for both our guests and our team.

More than anything, I want readers to know that The Head Spa Sanctuary is about creating moments of restoration in a world that moves incredibly fast. Whether someone comes to us for scalp health concerns, stress relief, therapeutic wellness, or simply a moment to breathe, our goal is for every guest to leave feeling refreshed in mind, body, and soul.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m a huge believer in constantly learning and exposing myself to different perspectives, especially as an entrepreneur and leader. A lot of the resources I gravitate toward are centered around business growth, communication, leadership, and personal development.

I love listening to podcasts and motivational talks while driving or getting ready for the day because it helps me stay inspired and focused. I’m especially drawn to conversations around leadership, company culture, communication, and building businesses with strong values and long-term vision.

Some of the people and resources I’ve consistently enjoyed learning from include Dave Ramsey for financial discipline and business mindset, Patrick Lencioni for leadership and team communication, and John C. Maxwell for personal growth and leadership development. Their content has really influenced the way I think about organizational health, culture, accountability, and leading people well.

I also spend a lot of time learning through real-world observation and networking with other business owners. Some of my biggest lessons honestly come from studying customer experiences, operations, hospitality, and how different companies make people feel. I’m constantly paying attention to details — whether it’s a luxury hotel, a wellness experience, or even a restaurant — because inspiration can come from anywhere.

Beyond business resources, I try to stay grounded in things that support my overall wellbeing too. Running a fast-growing company can be intense, so I’ve learned how important it is to create moments of quiet, reflection, and balance whenever possible.
