Meet Kimberly Neal of North Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Neal.

Hi Kimberly, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Over 10 years ago, I started my nursing career in surgical oncology. At the time, I didn’t realize it, but my true passion was caring for seniors. As I worked with patients and families, I began to see a need for something different, a place where older adults could receive exceptional care in a home-like environment rather than an institutional setting.

My grandmother passed away at the age of 67. A nursing home was never an option for her, but looking back, a family care home would have been a wonderful environment for her to thrive in during her later years. That experience stuck with me and helped shape my vision for the future in my community.

I wanted to create high-quality environments where seniors can thrive! A place where they can age with dignity and feel like they are truly at home. My goal has always been to provide a setting where residents can transition through the aging process. A safe place they can go from assisted living all the way through end-of-life care; all while surrounded by people who genuinely know them, love them, and treat them like family. I believe every senior deserves the highest quality of care for whatever quantity of time God allows us to provide it.

That passion led me to open and operate residential assisted living homes in North Carolina. Along the way, I’ve learned that assisted living and nursing homes are often misunderstood and stigmatized. Many families don’t realize there are smaller, more personalized options available. Unfortunately, in our region, we simply do not have enough family care homes providing this level of individualized care.

Today, my mission extends beyond caring for residents. I am passionate about teaching and mentoring others who want to enter the senior care industry. Through my Administrator-in-Training program, consulting, and educational initiatives, I help future operators learn how to open and run quality care homes of their own. My hope is that by training others, we can create more options for seniors and families and continue raising the standard of care in our communities.

I genuinely love what I do. Caring for seniors is not just my profession—it is my calling. There is something incredibly rewarding about knowing that I can make someone’s final chapter comfortable, meaningful, and filled with dignity. Being trusted by families to care for the people they love most is a responsibility I never take lightly. Even with the challenges that come with healthcare and business ownership, I wouldn’t change this path for anything.

Looking back, what started as a nursing career became a purpose. Every resident, every family, every caregiver, and every student I have had the privilege of working with and every hard lesson along the way has reinforced why I do this work. I truly believe that providing compassionate, high-quality care for seniors is one of the most meaningful ways we can serve others, and I am grateful to be part of that journey every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been easy. I’ve faced challenges with staffing, regulations, business growth, and balancing the many hats that come with being a nurse, administrator, educator, and business owner. Early on, I even had to challenge the state in order to obtain my license. At the time, there was a push for me to serve the mental health population, but my heart was with seniors. I knew there was a need for more high-quality, home-like options for aging adults in our community, and I felt strongly that this was where I was being called to serve. It wasn’t an easy process, but I stood my ground, advocated for my vision, and ultimately prevailed.

One of the hardest parts of this work is losing residents who have become like family and helping their loved ones navigate that loss. There have been moments when I’ve felt exhausted and stretched thin, but I’ve never lost sight of why I started. Every challenge has made me stronger and reinforced my commitment to creating high-quality environments where seniors can thrive.

At the end of the day, I genuinely love what I do. Caring for seniors isn’t just my profession, it’s my calling.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve always believed that smaller, residential care homes can offer something that larger settings often can’t. We offer a more personal experience with individualized care. Our residents aren’t room numbers. They’re family. We get to know their routines, preferences, life stories, and what brings them joy. That personal connection is something I am incredibly proud of.

What sets me apart is that my focus has never been on filling beds, Every decision I make is centered around what’s best for the residents. This isn’t just what I teach, it’s what I do! Every day. I’m caring for residents, supporting families, training staff, navigating surveys, and dealing with the same challenges that other operators face. The guidance I provide comes from firsthand experience, not just something I learned in a classroom. The care we provide is a work of heart and our care team is absolutely amazing!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
If I had to choose one quality that has been most important to my success, it would be trust. Families are trusting us with the people they love most, and that is a responsibility I never take lightly. Our families know that we will keep their loved ones safe, care for them with compassion, and treat them with dignity and respect.

I think that trust comes from the fact that we’re truly a family caring for families. This isn’t a corporate operation. My mother has been an important part of our homes, and my daughters have also been involved over the years. Caring for seniors is something our family genuinely believes in. When families choose us, they’re not just choosing a facility, they’re becoming part of our extended family.

At the end of the day, the greatest compliment we can receive is when a family tells us they have peace of mind knowing their loved one is in our care. That’s what we’re most proud of, and it’s something we work hard to earn every single day.
