Exploring Life & Business with Tess Mangum of Sonic Pie Productions, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tess Mangum.

Hi Tess, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I, like so many other entrepreneurs, founded Sonic Pie Productions after a lay off from a full time job in the same industry. I had two young children at home and no option not to earn an income or use my undergraduate and graduate degrees. That was 13 years and a pandemic ago!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve been able to successfully navigate all predictable road blocks but the spread of Covid-19, associated gathering restrictions and remote learning definitely caused trouble. Luckily, at the time, most of our concerts and production work were produced outside, in places like parks and plazas, so we were allowed to resume more quickly than brick and mortar venues.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sonic Pie Productions provides live concert and event sound production services (P.A., staging, lighting rental), the crew you need (sound engineers, lighting engineers, stage hands, stage managers, production managers), talent buying/curatorial services and acts as a consultant on all of the above.

What sets Sonic Pie Productions apart from other sound production companies is that we actually care about your event. It’s not “just another gig” to us. Our team consists of two generations of multi-cultural, multi-racial, ally and queer women and men. It reflects the strength and diversity of North Carolina.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I actually don’t consider myself a risk taker, but, one thing I remind myself is your personal and business reputations take a risk every day you hitch your wagon to a project or event! It takes a lifetime to build up a good reputation but five minutes of treating someone badly or gossiping to tear it down.
