Today we’d like to introduce you to Vinny Mac.
Hi Vinny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My musical journey starts like most in the 1980s, Michael Jackson. My study of melodies and lyrics starts with my (arguable) favorite Michael song. The Way You Make Me Feel. Words like “ecstasy” used in the song sent me to the dictionary and from there, a life long love affair of expression. A student of all genres, hip-hop, rnb and gospel I would call my three majors. As an artist, I HAVE to express myself, I have to get it out of my system. I started writing poetry, to remixing songs and freestyles, to writing original songs, to putting out music “officially”. A natural progression.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A smooth road? NO. I went into making music naive, thinking the song alone is what matters most. Great music would carry the load, etc., but boy was I wrong. Like anything else, politics and bs run things. I never imagined as well that I would end up becoming my own recording engineer as well as mixing and mastering my own music. I had to become a student of multiple unplanned disciplines in order for me to get my music out to the world. Frustrations and annoyances compiled non-stop. Not to mention, learning the hard way about what it means to have “support”. My passion and resilience with my faith is the only reason I still persist. I believe in the work.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Growing up, music has always been a source of therapy, comfort and inspiration. My goal is to give what was given to me in the music I have enjoyed, to others. To pay it forward. With that said my music I would define as “my soul to your soul”, not about chart placements. I enjoy singles and “hits”, but what has made me a real fan of artists is the totality of an artist. I prefer artists with great albums over great singles and mediocre albums. That would make me an “album artist”. I strive to deliver great bodies of work, with soul and feelings, still being that fly shit. Ha. The goal is to enjoy my music as well as it meaning something to you. Ha.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I would consider myself not so much in the music industry. But, it appears the shift is happening now with independence being respected and suggested now more than ever. The allure of signing to a label has fizzled out. It would appear labels might exist solely for the “big” artists who play the big artist game. More direct to consumer avenues are being built. I’m curious to see where it all goes as labels will not go without a fight. Adapt or die. Both sides.
