Community Highlights: Meet Jordana Duncan of Motor Mouth Speech Therapy, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordana Duncan.

Hi Jordana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a new speech language pathologist, I had a patient struggling to make progress. My mentor encouraged me to mention the patient’s obvious tongue tie to her mom. I was reluctant, because in graduate school we learned to work around a tongue tie, to teach the patient to compensate rather than addressing the restriction. But I followed the advice and the patient had a procedure to release the restriction. The immediate improvement in her ability to progress toward meeting her therapy goals was obvious and I became very motivated to learn more. This led me toward many courses in myofunctional therapy, a specialty area within my field that addresses muscle function of the mouth and face. In addition to improving ability to meet speech language goals, myofunctional therapy and correction of tongue ties if present has a positive impact on jaw growth in children, nasal breathing, airway and sleep . These benefits can include adults as well including decreased clenching/grinding and body tension. I’ve been slowly working my way toward focusing on this area exclusively and am so grateful to be owner of Motor Mouth Speech Therapy where I can focus on myofunctional therapy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It took 8 years to be at the point where this business could be my only job. Part of that was personal circumstances but also the public awareness of the importance of myofunctional therapy has really increased in the past couple of years with the help of social media. So it is finally recognized by dentists, orthodontists, some doctors and moms enough to be sought after. It was a struggle to balance this small business with another job for so long but definitely worth the wait.
