Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhonda James.
Hi Rhonda , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Smart Azz Auntie started as something I never expected to become a business.
I’ve always been the person with the sarcastic comment, the side-eye, the practical advice, and the ability to find humor in situations that would normally stress people out. Like many Gen X women, I’ve spent years balancing work, family, responsibilities, and life while learning that sometimes laughter is the best survival skill.
I began creating content simply as a creative outlet. I didn’t have a marketing strategy, a business plan, or dreams of becoming an influencer. I just started sharing relatable observations about everyday life, aging, work, family, and the unique experience of growing up as a Gen Xer. One video led to another, and before long, people from all over the country were saying, “I thought I was the only one who felt this way.”
That connection became the foundation of the Smart Azz Auntie brand.
What started as social media content has grown into a community of more than 300,000 followers across multiple platforms. Along the way, I’ve written a bestselling book, *Smartass Affirmations: Vibes from the Water Hose Generation*, launched merchandise, created digital products, built a membership community called Auntie’s Petty Posse, and even had the opportunity to appear on the nationally syndicated *Tamron Hall* show.
What I’m most proud of isn’t the follower count or the media opportunities. It’s the community that has formed around the brand. People come for the humor, but they stay because they feel seen. Whether we’re talking about workplace frustrations, family dynamics, finances, getting older, or just surviving another Tuesday, there’s comfort in realizing you’re not alone.
Today, Smart Azz Auntie is a blend of humor, storytelling, community, and encouragement. My goal has always been simple: make people laugh, help them feel understood, and remind them that life gets a little easier when you can find something to laugh about, even if it’s through a healthy dose of sarcasm.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not.
What people see today is the content, the community, the book, and the opportunities that have come from the brand. What they don’t always see is the trial and error behind the scenes.
One of the biggest challenges was simply starting. Like many people, I worried about what others would think. Putting yourself online and sharing your personality can feel vulnerable, especially when you’re not trying to fit into the typical influencer mold. I had to learn to be comfortable being authentically myself and trust that the right audience would find me.
Another challenge has been balancing multiple responsibilities. While building the Smart Azz Auntie brand, I’ve also maintained a professional career, managed family responsibilities, and navigated all the normal ups and downs of life. Building a brand isn’t just creating content; it’s learning marketing, technology, publishing, merchandising, community management, and business operations, often all at the same time.
I’ve also learned that growth doesn’t happen in a straight line. Some content performs well, some doesn’t. Some ideas take off immediately, while others never gain traction. There have been moments of self-doubt, creative fatigue, and wondering whether I should keep going. But each challenge taught me something valuable about persistence, adaptability, and staying true to my voice.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that authenticity matters more than perfection. The reason people connect with Smart Azz Auntie isn’t that everything is polished; it’s because it’s real. The humor, the stories, the struggles, and the lessons are all rooted in real-life experiences that many people can relate to.
Looking back, I wouldn’t call it a smooth road, but I would call it a worthwhile one. Every obstacle helped shape not only the brand but also the community that has grown around it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At its core, Smart Azz Auntie is a humor and lifestyle brand built around helping people laugh through the realities of adulthood.
I create content that blends sarcasm, storytelling, nostalgia, and practical life lessons, primarily through a Gen X lens. I’m known for taking everyday frustrations, family dynamics, workplace situations, aging, finances, and current events and turning them into relatable humor that makes people say, “I thought I was the only one who felt that way.”
Over time, that content evolved into much more than social media. Today, I create videos, write books, develop digital resources, speak to audiences through my online community, and create products designed to entertain, encourage, and connect people through shared experiences.
What I’m most proud of is the community that has formed around the brand. People often tell me they came for a funny video but stayed because they felt seen, understood, and connected. In a world where so much online content feels curated and polished, I’ve built a space where people can laugh, vent, share stories, and realize they’re not alone in what they’re experiencing.
I believe what sets me apart is authenticity. I never set out to become a traditional influencer. I’m a wife, mother, professional, entrepreneur, and everyday person who happens to share her perspective online. I don’t try to present a perfect life. Instead, I talk openly about the things many people experience but don’t always say out loud.
I also think my background gives me a unique perspective. I’ve worked in corporate environments, government agencies, higher education, entrepreneurship, and training. Those experiences allow me to connect with a wide range of people and create content that resonates across generations and professions.
Most importantly, I want people to leave my content feeling a little lighter than they did before they found it. If I can make someone laugh, feel understood, or help them get through a difficult day with a little humor and perspective, then I’ve done exactly what I set out to do.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m always reading, listening, and learning, but one book that really resonated with me is The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. Its message about focusing your energy on what truly matters aligns with how I try to approach both life and business.
I also enjoy podcasts and content focused on entrepreneurship, personal growth, and storytelling. Beyond that, I rely on digital tools to stay organized while balancing content creation, business ownership, family, and my professional career.
Honestly, one of my greatest resources is the community I’ve built. The conversations, experiences, and perspectives people share every day inspire much of what I create and continually remind me that we’re all figuring life out as we go.
