Meet Twanna Joyner Jones of North Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Twanna Joyner Jones.

Hi Twanna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Founder and CEO Twanna Jones established The Help Center NC in 2016 to combat poverty and hunger in the Kerr-Tar and Triangle regions. After over 25 years of nonprofit work, she launched the organization to provide essential resources like emergency food, mobile pantries, housing referrals, and youth enrichment to underserved families.
The grassroots organization quickly grew from a local ministry to a multi-county lifeline serving Wake, Vance, Granville, Durham Warren, Franklin counties and part of Virginia . Their hands-on story includes operating out of their Henderson, NC location while running initiatives like mobile food distributions, diaper banks, and holiday supply giveaways.
Today, the team focuses on meeting the basic, complex, and spiritual needs of marginalized people in North Carolina. They continue to expand their reach through community partnerships and emergency resource drives.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting and running a nonprofit is rarely smooth road. We have faced steep operational hurdles. Many nonprofits in the state struggle with funding delays, volunteer burnout and unpredictable donations levels.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am most proud of our front-line efforts in the war against poverty and hunger expanding across multiple counties and states.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along the way is you have to balance your mission driven dedication , avoid burnout , divide the work and treat your operation like a business for a stronger community impact
