Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Newell.
Hi Bobby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born to teenage parents in a Catholic family. Both of these things helped me to develop a sense of emotional intelligence and the belief that it is my responsibility to give back to my community. I knew since I was a kid that I wanted to be a therapist. It was just part of my nature. My original intention was to go to graduate school at Stanford and get my PhD in Clinical Psychology. Alas, I fell in love and stayed in NC instead. I went to UNC Chapel Hill and got my Masters in Social Work. Throughout my journey as a mental health professional, the biggest thing I’ve seen is that people often do not feel seen and heard by their providers or the people in their community. If you can help a person feel validated, you can open the door for change. I’ve found that I love working with some of the most challenging cases because the payoff is change where someone once believed this wasn’t possible for them. My job is incredibly rewarding in that way and I feel honored to have the opportunity to share some of the highest highs and even some of the lowest lows with folks.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not, lol. I currently own a group practice and no one taught me how to manage people. I have had to learn that the hard way. It’s come with a lot of bumps in the road and hard lessons for sure.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mindful Collaboration?
Mindful Collaboration is a group mental health practice that focuses on the treatment of trauma. All of our clinicians are trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and a variety of other trauma treatment modalities. We are located in the heart of Durham and we offer services to people across the state of NC. We are known for taking some of the most challenging cases and being able to sit with folks when they are actively experiencing suicidal ideation. We are very open to working with a wide variety of backgrounds and that diversity is also reflected in our clinicians. One of the things I am most proud of is that we offer a wide variety of ways for our clinicians to work with clients. They can offer individual sessions, group therapy, intensives and workshops in the community. We also offer a week of paid vacation per quarter to our employees. By doing these things, we are actively working to reduce burnout and decrease employee stress. I wrote a book about reducing burnout in the workplace called S.H.I.F.T. Happens.
What matters most to you?
My reputation as an employer who values their employees. I want my employees to also feel seen and heard.
