Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Barnett.
Hi Devon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for Pilates began when I was 12 years old while training as a ballet dancer. What started as a way to support my dance training quickly became a passion that led me to pursue a comprehensive Pilates certification. After becoming certified, I spent several years teaching at various franchise studios throughout Wilmington, gaining valuable experience and working with a wide variety of clients.
While I loved teaching, I found myself craving something different, something more personal. I wanted to create a space where clients felt truly seen, where relationships could be built, and where movement could be taught in a more intimate setting.
That dream became a reality when I began teaching private sessions out of my home. With just one reformer, one chair, and a lot of determination, Rose Pilates was born. The name came naturally, inspired by the street where it all started and the idea of creating something that could grow and flourish. Along for the journey was my dog, Henri, who quickly became part of the studio experience. Whether greeting clients at the door or keeping watch over sessions, Henri was there from the very beginning.
Eventually, we found a permanent home for Rose Pilates in downtown Wilmington on Front Street, where my family and I completed all of the renovations ourselves.
Today, Rose Pilates is still built on the same values it started with: personalized instruction, meaningful relationships, and a welcoming atmosphere. While we’ve expanded our equipment to include four reformers, springboards, a Cadillac, a chair, and a variety of props, we’ve intentionally maintained the intimate feel that made Rose Pilates special from the start.
Looking back, I had no idea the studio would grow into what it is today. My mission for Rose Pilates remains unchanged: to create a space where people feel welcome, empowered, and inspired through movement.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most small business owners, my journey has not been without challenges. One of the biggest has been wearing so many hats. As the owner and sole instructor, I’m responsible not only for teaching classes and private sessions, but also for managing the day-to-day operations of the business. Balancing those responsibilities while continuing to grow the studio has required a great deal of time, adaptability, and perseverance.
Another significant challenge came last summer when I experienced a serious health setback that resulted in an unexpected hospitalization and temporary closure of the studio. It was a difficult period both personally and professionally, as I was forced to step away from the business I had worked so hard to build. However, that experience reinforced the importance of resilience, community, and support. The encouragement from my clients, family, and friends during that time reminded me just how meaningful Rose Pilates had become to so many people.
While there have certainly been obstacles along the way, each challenge has helped shape the studio into what it is today and strengthened my commitment to creating a welcoming, supportive space for every client who walks through our doors.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rose Pilates Wilmington ?
Rose Pilates is a boutique Pilates studio located in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. We specialize in small-group reformer classes, private sessions, and personalized instruction designed to help clients build strength, improve mobility, and move with confidence.
What sets Rose Pilates apart is our intentionally small and personal approach. Unlike larger franchise studios, we keep class sizes small so that every client receives individualized attention and thoughtful instruction. Our goal is to create an experience that feels welcoming, supportive, and tailored to each person’s needs rather than a one-size-fits-all workout.
We’re also passionate about creating community beyond the studio walls. Throughout the year, we host social gatherings and events that allow clients to connect with one another outside of class. These experiences have helped foster the strong sense of community that Rose Pilates is known for and have turned the studio into much more than just a place to exercise.
One of the things I’m most proud of is that Rose Pilates has maintained its original mission even as it has grown. We have expanded our equipment, offerings, and client base, but we have never lost sight of what mattered from the beginning: helping people feel seen, supported, and empowered through movement.
At its core, Rose Pilates is about more than fitness. It’s about building confidence, improving quality of life, and creating meaningful connections. Whether someone is brand new to Pilates or has years of experience, we strive to provide an environment where they can feel comfortable, challenged, and successful.
What makes you happy?
The most rewarding part of what I do is seeing the positive impact Pilates has on people’s lives. Whether a client is gaining strength, improving mobility, recovering confidence in their body, or reaching a personal fitness goal, being part of that journey is incredibly fulfilling.
I love watching clients progress and accomplish things they never thought possible. Some arrive feeling intimidated or unsure of themselves, and over time they develop confidence, strength, and a deeper connection to their bodies. Those transformations are what inspire me every day.
Beyond the physical results, what makes me happiest is the community we’ve built at Rose Pilates. What started as a small studio has become a place where people form friendships, support one another, and genuinely enjoy spending time together. Seeing clients celebrate each other’s successes and feel at home in the studio is something I never take for granted.
