Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Birch.
Hi Jenn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
With over 20 years in the child and play therapy treatment industry, I love serving the Raleigh community in the mental health sector. In 2022, it became apparent, post-COVID, of the painful reality of turning away kids who needed support. Recognizing that our community had more needs than I could physically meet was the primary catalyst for growth and scaling the practice’s capacity for care. Since 2022, we have moved from a solo practice to leading a team of 27 clinicians. This meant expanding our brick and mortar footprint to support Durham, North Raleigh, and Cary, intentional recruiting with complementary specializations, and becoming a One-Stop Continuity of Care system for the whole family allowing for coordinated (but strictly confidential) care dynamics. In addition, our goal to equally support clinicians and avoid burnout, through weekly peer consultation, shared administrative burdens, and ongoing support ensure that clinicians stay healthy and present for their clients. We desire to be a community anchor, no longer just treating individuals, but actively shaping the area’s healthcare ecosystem. Now, spending my time as the visionary officer, I focus on how the team can continue to serve the community through individual therapy, psychological testing, community and school workshops, parenting classes, and social skills groups. Our passion continues to be about meeting the needs of the entire family, providing wrap around care with personalized matching of best clinician fit from the very first call.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We are determined to maintain the same high quality of care, warmth, and clinical philosophy that was present when we were a solo practice. Transitioning from a clinical provider to a business leader requires openness to change and clear intention. My biggest goal is to walk alongside when clinicians need the support, and move out of the way when they are ready to take ownership of their practice at Birch. That is a balance we name daily.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Birch Therapy is a boutique psychotherapy practice providing mental health services in the Triangle. Our mission is to create a safe space to support all people across the lifespan, providing strength-based, inclusive, and identity-affirming therapy. Since opening our doors in 2010, Birch Therapy has taken pride in meeting the mental health needs of the greater Raleigh community, specifically in serving children and adolescents. We value partnering with community agencies, medical practices and area schools to help strengthen individual coping skills and improve family relationships. Our offerings now include child and play therapy, teen and adolescent therapy, family therapy, therapy for women and men in life’s transitions, psychological testing and evaluations for ages 7-17, community support to include parenting classes, school workshops, early development observations, and parent coaching. While each clinician is unique and skilled in a high trained specialization, we maintain the same goal to collaborate and support the Raleigh area children and families.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the global mental health industry is making it increasingly more difficult for clients to find high quality care. Our hope it is continue to make the process of seeking support as seamless as possible, beginning with a personalized discovery call to match clients with the best fit for their family. While telehealth has become more popular, and will continue to be a support of convenience, our intentionality with each physical space, from the parking lot into the session, reinforces the regulation, safety, and connection that only in person therapy services can offer.
