Today we’d like to introduce you to Owice Aittaleb.
Hi Owice, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Morocco and grew up in my father’s boutique clothing stores, which were known for exceptional quality and personalized customer service. Some of my earliest memories are watching him pair fabrics, colors, and patterns for his customers. That experience shaped my eye for design and taught me the importance of craftsmanship. By age 16, I had opened my own clothing store, but I always knew I wanted to build something uniquely my own.
At 20, I moved to North Carolina in search of education, opportunity, and adventure. Over the next two decades, I earned multiple degrees and built a successful career in corporate America. Yet I continually felt pulled toward my roots and looked for ways to connect the two worlds that had shaped me.
What I noticed was that America offered incredible design possibilities, luxury products, and endless choices, but often lacked the deep sense of craftsmanship and artistry that is woven into everyday life in Morocco. That realization sparked the idea for Zellige Tile Studio.
While visiting tile showrooms across the United States, I found that many products felt highly standardized and mass-produced. At the same time, I knew there was a centuries-old Moroccan craft that offered something entirely different. Through my extended family in Fez, who bring more than 55 years of experience in Zellige production, design, and installation—including projects at the iconic La Mamounia hotel—I saw an opportunity to introduce authentic Moroccan Zellige to a broader audience.
When I launched the business, I explored every avenue possible. I sold directly to homeowners, partnered with interior designers and builders, and eventually focused on supporting tile retailers. I even rolled up my sleeves and participated in installations myself. Those experiences gave me invaluable insight into consumer preferences, installation challenges, and what it truly takes to deliver a successful project.
Today, Zellige Tile Studio is exclusively dedicated to authentic handmade Moroccan Zellige tile. Our mission is to support resellers and design professionals across residential and commercial projects while helping preserve and celebrate a centuries-old craft. We work closely with our partners to provide stocked inventory, custom design solutions, installation guidance, and exceptional service. Every tile we sell carries a story of artistry, heritage, and human craftsmanship, and sharing that story remains at the heart of what we do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most entrepreneurial journeys, it has been rewarding, but certainly not without challenges. While I brought experience in design, business, and supply chain management, I still had to learn the nuances of the U.S. tile industry and the expectations of the American market.
One of the biggest challenges has been educating consumers about the nature of authentic Zellige. Every tile is handmade, which means there will be natural variation in size, shape, color, and texture. Those differences are not flaws—they are the very qualities that make Zellige beautiful. However, many American consumers are accustomed to machine-made products where uniformity is expected. We have spent significant time helping customers understand what we call “perfectly imperfect.” When viewed individually, each tile is unique; when installed together, they create something extraordinary.
Operating between two cultures and two business environments has also required careful navigation. Morocco offers incredible craftsmanship and artisan expertise, but success depends on bridging different expectations around quality standards, communication, and timelines. My background and understanding of both cultures have been instrumental in creating that connection.
Looking back, those challenges strengthened the business. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch Moroccan Zellige become recognized and celebrated throughout the design industry. Today, it appears in leading design publications and some of the most beautiful residential and commercial spaces in the country. Most meaningful to me, however, is the opportunity to share a piece of Moroccan culture and help preserve a craft that has been passed down through generations.
As you know, we’re big fans of Zellige Tile Studio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Zellige Tile Studio is exclusively dedicated to authentic handmade Moroccan Zellige tile. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, we bring more than 55 years of family heritage in Zellige design, production, and installation to the U.S. market. Our mission is to support resellers, designers, architects, and builders while championing the modern revival of centuries-old Moroccan craftsmanship.
Every tile is individually shaped, glazed, and kiln-fired by skilled artisans in Morocco. The result is a surface rich with variation in color, texture, and depth—qualities that cannot be replicated by mass production. This organic character brings warmth and movement to kitchens, bathrooms, pools, fireplaces, feature walls, and countless other applications.
Our Charlotte warehouse maintains inventory in more than 25 rich and nuanced colors across classic square and rectangular formats, along with select mosaic designs. We also provide custom cutting, bespoke design solutions, and specialized support for unique projects.
What truly sets us apart is our combination of authenticity, expertise, and service. We are not simply importing tile—we are sharing a craft that has been part of our family and culture for generations. We work closely with our reseller partners and design professionals to provide product education, design guidance, and installation expertise, ensuring every project is successful from concept to completion.
As a Moroccan-born founder, I take great pride in serving as a bridge between the master artisans of Morocco and the design community in the United States. One of our proudest milestones was being featured on the national PBS series Fork & Hammer, which highlighted the artistry and craftsmanship behind authentic Zellige tile.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
What we love most about Zellige is that it transcends trends. While its popularity has grown significantly in recent years, its appeal is rooted in something timeless: craftsmanship, authenticity, and beauty created by human hands.
When Zellige first gained traction in the U.S., most projects centered around our classic formats—particularly 4×4, 2×6, and 2×2 tiles—which beautifully showcase the natural variation of the material. Today, we are seeing designers become increasingly creative, incorporating bold layouts, larger installations, and intricate patterns that push the boundaries of what tile can achieve.
We also see Zellige aligning with a broader shift toward more natural, grounded, and emotionally comforting interiors. Homeowners are seeking spaces that feel authentic and connected to nature, and handmade materials play an important role in creating that feeling.
At the same time, designers are embracing Zellige as an artistic medium. Applications are expanding well beyond traditional backsplashes and bathrooms into feature walls, pools, outdoor spaces, fireplaces, and full-room installations. We expect that evolution to continue as awareness and appreciation for the material grows.
From a business perspective, we continue to monitor broader economic factors, including residential and commercial construction activity, transportation costs, and trade policies. As an imported product, our industry is particularly sensitive to supply chain disruptions, tariffs, and freight fluctuations. Despite those variables, we remain optimistic because the demand for authentic, handcrafted products continues to grow.
