Today we’d like to introduce you to Kanishtha And Shvetank Agarwal.
Hi Kanishtha and Shvetank, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Story for the Magazine
We found ourselves deeply disillusioned with life as we entered our medical internship, having just completed the rigorous journey through medical school. The toll was immense—not so much from the academic pressures, but from the relentless exposure to human suffering that became a daily reality. During our clinical rotations at the government-managed hospital affiliated with the medical school, we witnessed the harshest forms of poverty. Patients routinely lost their lives, not due to a lack of medical knowledge, but because of the scarcity of essential resources. This constant confrontation with suffering bred a profound existential angst, prompting us to seek solace and meaning through various forms of meditation. Our restless search for inner peace finally led us to a transformative meditation session organized by the Brahma Kumaris Organization in our medical school auditorium, a turning point that would shape our lives in unexpected ways.
We had absolutely no prior knowledge of the Brahma Kumaris—never having even heard the name before. All we sought was a respite from our inner turmoil, a taste of peace amidst the chaos, and meditation seemed a logical place to start. The talk and the guided meditation session felt uniquely personal, as if tailored for our weary souls. We were swept away by a profound sense of tranquility and a vivid feeling of being transported beyond the physical, an almost otherworldly experience that left us longing for more. As we exited the auditorium, we learned that the meditation course was offered free of charge, a welcome blessing for financially struggling medical students. Without hesitation, we enrolled in the seven-session foundation course. Each session left us spellbound, our minds open and awestruck at the elegant simplicity and power of the wisdom shared. We found ourselves eagerly continuing into advanced daily classes, driven by a desire to deepen our understanding. Over time, we realized that one of the greatest lessons was the gradual, patient process of dissolving our egos, bit by bit, through consistent practice and self-reflection.
As the years passed, our involvement with the Brahma Kumaris deepened through a variety of volunteering projects and community initiatives. This hands-on engagement offered us an intimate understanding of the organization’s unique ethos and its broad, transformative mission. Established in India during the 1930s, the Brahma Kumaris has grown into a global spiritual movement, dedicated not just to the practice of Raja Yoga meditation but to nurturing inner peace, spiritual resilience, and the realization of universal values like love, respect, and non-violence. What sets the Brahma Kumaris apart is its unwavering belief that lasting transformation begins within the individual. By encouraging self-awareness, spiritual knowledge, and mindful living, the organization empowers people from all walks of life to become architects of a more harmonious and compassionate world. The Brahma Kumaris remains steadfast in its commitment to accessibility, offering free educational programs, meditation sessions, and service opportunities in over 130 countries. Through these inclusive efforts, the organization inspires countless individuals to live with integrity, kindness, and hope—while equipping them to be agents of positive change in their families, communities, and the wider world.
Then, in 2006, we embarked on a new chapter by moving to the United States. Our journey took us through several states—Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina —and finally to Cary, North Carolina—each offering its own set of challenges and invaluable lessons. With every move, we encountered diverse communities and fresh perspectives, which deepened our understanding of both ourselves and the world around us. Throughout this journey, we remained committed to serving others, sharing simple meditative techniques that could help people navigate stress and find inner calm. We offered free Raja Yoga courses to anyone interested, sometimes working with individuals one-on-one, and at other times, leading large group sessions.
The transition to North Carolina was particularly challenging. We faced uncertainty and moments of doubt, yet we also recognized a unique opportunity. The area’s highly educated and culturally curious population seemed especially receptive to the ancient wisdom of the yogis, inspiring us to redouble our efforts to share these transformative teachings.
Finding a dedicated space for our activities in Cary was an arduous process. After much searching and deliberation, we finally discovered a beautiful venue near Cary church—a welcoming sanctuary that has since become a safe haven for the community. Here, people not only find relief from daily stresses but also immerse themselves in learning and practicing the timeless spiritual wisdom of India.
Our center is located at 136 Quade Dr., Cary, NC 27513. We proudly open our doors to individuals from every culture, background, religion, profession, ethnicity, and orientation—embracing the rich diversity that makes our community vibrant and unique. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. The journey has been filled with its fair share of obstacles, both expected and unforeseen. Even when service comes from a place of unconditional love and dedication, challenges inevitably arise. One of the most persistent struggles is skepticism—many people are wary of unfamiliar spiritual practices, and not everyone is open to exploring new perspectives. At times, we have faced outright rejection or criticism, including verbal attacks from those who misunderstand our intentions or question our authenticity.
Moving to a new country brought its own set of difficulties—navigating cultural differences, building trust within diverse communities, and establishing credibility in unfamiliar environments required perseverance and resilience. There were moments when language barriers, logistical hurdles, and even loneliness threatened to dampen our resolve. The process of finding a suitable space for our center was fraught with setbacks; countless hours went into searching, negotiating, and sometimes facing disappointment when plans fell through.
Additionally, balancing our commitment to service with the demands of personal and professional life has not always been easy. There have been periods of exhaustion, self-doubt, and questioning whether our efforts were making a meaningful difference. Yet, these struggles have been powerful teachers—each challenge has deepened our empathy, strengthened our faith, and reminded us of the importance of perseverance. Ultimately, it is the small moments of transformation we witness in others—and within ourselves—that make every hardship worthwhile.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are both physicians by training and vocation. Shvetank is a cardiac anesthesiologist, currently practicing part-time, while Kanishtha, a pediatrician in India, made the profound decision to dedicate her life entirely to the service of humanity. Our professional backgrounds in medicine have given us a deep appreciation for compassion, healing, and the importance of holistic well-being. This perspective shapes the heart of our work today.
We specialize in teaching Raja Yoga meditation and guiding individuals on their spiritual journeys. Our center is known for its atmosphere of warmth, acceptance, and authenticity. We strive to create a safe, inclusive space where people from all backgrounds can explore meditation, self-awareness, and spiritual growth without judgment or financial burden. What sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to service: every course, session, and resource we offer is entirely free of charge, reflecting the spirit of selfless giving that underpins our mission.
We are most proud of the community we have built—a diverse tapestry of people who support and uplift one another on the path to inner peace. Witnessing the transformation in those who come to us seeking solace or clarity is a constant source of inspiration. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share the wisdom we have received and to be instruments of positive change in the lives of others. Ultimately, our work is not just about teaching meditation; it is about fostering connections, nurturing resilience, and helping people realize their own potential for happiness and fulfillment.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Many people who know us through our meditation work are often surprised to learn just how diverse our interests and backgrounds are. While we are deeply committed to spiritual practice, we are also lifelong learners with a strong foundation in science and medicine. Our journeys as physicians have taught us the value of curiosity, evidence-based thinking, and adaptability—traits that we bring into our spiritual teaching as well.
Another surprising aspect is our passion for cultural assimilation and integration. Although we honor and cherish our heritage, we have always sought to embrace new experiences, learn from different cultures, and find common ground with people of all backgrounds. This openness enriches both our personal lives and the welcoming atmosphere at our center. We are proud to maintain our originality and values while wholeheartedly engaging with the wider community.
Perhaps most unexpectedly, despite our roles as teachers and guides, we see ourselves as perpetual students of life—constantly seeking new perspectives and striving to grow, both personally and collectively. Our deep care for our neighbors, our local community, and the world at large drives everything we do, reminding us that true spirituality is reflected not just in meditation, but in everyday acts of kindness, empathy, and service.
