Today we’d like to introduce you to Aarik Duncan.
Hi Aarik, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story starts in Selma-Smithfield, NC — a small town with a big sound, at least in my household. From the time I was seven years old, I was playing drums for my dad, and that was it for me. Music wasn’t something I chose — it chose me.
Growing up, my ears were wide open. Gospel was the foundation — Commissioned, Fred Hammond, John P. Kee, Tye Tribbett, Doobie Powell, Kim Burrell — these artists shaped how I heard music before I even knew what an artist was. But I was also absorbing everything else around me: Nat King Cole, Donnie Hathaway, D’Angelo, Brandy, Frank Ocean, Jay-Z, Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip, The Roots, Mos Def, Bilal, Jill Scott, Coldplay, John Mayer, Goo Goo Dolls, Foo Fighters, Green Day. I didn’t see genres — I just heard feeling.
There have been two moments that genuinely changed the trajectory of everything for me.
The first was in 2018, when a close friend of mine, Marty Taylor, encouraged me to start recording and producing music myself. That shift — from performer to creator — unlocked something I didn’t even know was waiting. It put me in the driver’s seat of my own sound and my own story.
The second was the decision to become DVNCANBLOOM. That name change wasn’t about leaving Aarik Duncan behind — it was about refining him. DVNCANBLOOM represents growth, intentionality, and a creative identity that’s fully my own. Rooted. Reaching. In full bloom.
That’s where I am today — and honestly, I feel like I’m just getting started.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? Not even close. But I wouldn’t trade the road for anything.
2019 was one of the hardest years of my life. I lost my marriage and NiiTO — the band I had poured everything into from 2015 to 2019 — came to an end. Just like that, two of the most important things in my world were gone at the same time. I was starting completely over, from the ground up.
Then 2020 hit and the whole world shut down. But honestly? That stillness became a gift I didn’t ask for. With nowhere to go and nothing to perform, I locked in and practiced recording and producing more than I ever had in my life. I started to find myself in the music in a deeper way.
But the years that followed were a grind. Being overlooked — I kept going. Missing opportunity after opportunity — I kept going. Being underestimated — I kept going. In 2024, I almost walked away from music altogether. I was that close.
But something in me wouldn’t let it go.
Then 2025 came — and I got the call to be on The Voice. And from that moment, everything changed. All those years of pushing through, every door that closed, every moment I almost quit — it was all leading somewhere. It was all preparation.
The road was rough. But it was mine.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At my core, I’m an artist and songwriter. Everything else — the performances, the band, the brand — flows from that. I write and create because I have something to say, and I’ve spent my whole life finding the best way to say it.
Most people in the Raleigh area know me through NiiTO, the band I built and led from 2015 to 2019. What we created in that season was something special — a live music experience that blended soul, R&B, hip-hop, and everything in between. Building that from the ground up is something I’ll always be proud of.
As a solo artist, I released my debut album EchoLov3 — a body of work that represents me finding my own voice as a creator. And now, with the evolution into DVNCANBLOOM, I’m stepping into the fullest expression of who I am as an artist. It’s a brand, a sound, and a movement rooted in growth and intentionality — launching August 26th, 2026.
And then there’s The Voice. Getting that call in 2025 was the kind of moment that reminds you why you never quit.
But if you ask me what truly sets me apart — it’s my intentions. I’m not chasing trends or noise. Everything I create is designed to bring peace and light into the world, in my own way. That’s the throughline across every song, every performance, every project.
That’s what I do. That’s what I specialize in. That’s what I’m known for.
