Rising Stars: Meet Sonya Boyd of North Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Boyd.

Hi Sonya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi, I’m Sonya and I’m the founder of Nineteen72 Home and Co. This all started during COVID when I found myself needing a creative outlet. What started with making t-shirts, handmade wood signs, and custom mugs quickly became a passion for creating products that bring warmth and personality into everyday spaces. While I enjoyed handcrafting those items, I wanted to challenge myself and step further outside of my comfort zone — which ultimately led me into the world of home fragrance.

Curated for home and living, our products are designed to help create spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and lived in. From candles to room/linen sprays and home essentials, each piece is thoughtfully crafted with simplicity, quality, and everyday comfort in mind.

Each candle is made with clean coconut apricot wax, phthalate-free oils, and eco-friendly materials. Every scent is carefully blended to tell a story and create moments that feel personal, comforting, and memorable.
Our hope is that each scent brings comfort, warmth, and a sense of home into your space.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges has been building my business while working a full-time job. Balancing both requires a lot of time, patience, and sacrifice. There have been plenty of late nights and weekends spent learning, creating products, and growing my brand, but every challenge has helped me grow and stay committed to my vision.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve spent my career in healthcare as a medical coding auditor, where attention to detail and accuracy are essential. What I’m most proud of is my ability to stay committed to growth—both professionally and personally. Whether it’s in my career or building my business on the side, I enjoy learning new things, solving problems, and creating something meaningful.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
What has worked best for me is being open to learning from others and building genuine relationships. A good mentor doesn’t always come through a formal program—sometimes it’s someone whose experience you admire and who is willing to share advice. My biggest tip is to be authentic, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to make the first connection.
