Today we’d like to introduce you to Melvin Breeden.
Hi Melvin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story is really a story of purpose—purpose that has revealed itself over time, often before I was fully aware of it.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been driven by the idea of impact. Early in my career, I genuinely believed I was going to change the world by myself. That mindset led to frustration, disappointment, and more than a few missteps. Over time, however, I learned an important lesson: meaningful impact is rarely about what one person can accomplish alone. It’s about how well we care for people and how effectively we build community.
That lesson didn’t come naturally to me. My instincts tend to lean toward structure, strategy, and innovation. I enjoy solving problems and building systems. But throughout my journey, I’ve discovered that the most transformative forces are often much simpler—care, connection, and community.
My faith has taught me that every person has inherent worth and purpose. That belief shapes how I lead, how I serve, and how I view the people our organization walks alongside every day. When I look at the world, I see community at the center of almost everything, both positive and negative. Communities shape who we become, what opportunities we have access to, and how we respond to challenges.
Because of that belief, my career has taken me through mental health services, education, and the nonprofit sector, all in pursuit of helping people build stronger foundations for themselves and their families.
The work has challenged me to become a better man today than I was yesterday. It has taught me patience, humility, and the importance of meeting people where they are. It has also reminded me that progress is rarely a solo endeavor. We move further when we move together.
Earlier in my career, I measured impact one person at a time. Today, as Chief Operations Officer at StepUp Ministry, I’ve learned that building strong systems, supporting great staff, and creating sustainable organizations can multiply impact far beyond what any one person can accomplish alone.
One of my personal values is continuous growth. I believe leaders should never stop learning because every new skill creates another opportunity to serve people more effectively.
I still have moments where I focus too much on outcomes, metrics, and what needs to get done. But whenever I find myself drifting in that direction, I return to a simple reminder: it’s the community, stupid. The greatest impact I’ve ever witnessed has happened when people come together, care for one another, and work toward a common goal.
I used to think changing the world was about what I could do for people. Today, I believe it’s about building communities that help people discover what they can do for themselves.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road involving people is ever completely smooth.
One of the greatest challenges throughout my career has been balancing competing priorities. There is often tension between what an organization needs and what an individual needs. We hope those things align, but sometimes they don’t.
I experienced this firsthand while working as a community support professional serving youth and families affected by mental health challenges. Because services were funded through Medicaid, there were times when an insurance provider determined that a young person no longer qualified for services—even when my professional assessment and personal experience suggested otherwise.
That meant having difficult conversations with young people and families after months of building trust and relationships. Sometimes I think my heart broke more than theirs.
Like many people in helping professions, I’ve struggled with finding the right balance between professional responsibility and personal compassion. There were times when I followed policy exactly as expected. There were other times when my heart simply couldn’t accept the limitations of a system and I found myself doing far more than any job description required.
What I’ve learned is that people are the protagonists of their own stories. Most people already possess the strength and resilience needed to overcome their challenges. What they often lack are the tools, resources, opportunities, or support systems that help them move forward.
My role is not to save people. My role is to help restore access to the ladder of opportunity so that people can climb it for themselves.
That belief continues to guide my work today. Impact is not about carrying people. It’s about creating pathways, opening doors, and helping people access the tools they need to thrive.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At StepUp Ministry, our mission is to provide pathways for people to overcome barriers and transform their lives.
Our vision is a safe and thriving community where people have equal opportunity and purpose. What makes StepUp special is not any single program. It’s our approach to transformation. There are five key elements that define our work: community, coaching and case management, mentorship, multigenerational engagement, and skill-building curriculum.
Community is the foundation of everything we do. We intentionally create spaces where people can connect, share meals, celebrate successes, and build meaningful relationships. Transformation happens faster when people know they belong.
Our coaching and case management teams walk alongside participants as guides, advocates, connectors, and cheerleaders. They help people navigate challenges, access resources, and stay focused on their goals.
Mentorship brings community members and volunteers into the process, creating opportunities for encouragement, accountability, and growth.
Our multigenerational approach recognizes that lasting change often happens at the family level. We serve children, youth, young adults, and adults because stronger families create stronger communities.
Finally, our skill-building curriculum equips participants with practical tools for long-term success, whether that’s employment readiness, financial literacy, communication skills, emotional intelligence, or personal development.
At StepUp, success is not simply finding a job or completing a program. Our goal is to help people move toward long-term stability and ultimately thrive in every area of life.
What I am most proud of is that we never view people as projects to be fixed. We see them as individuals with strengths, dignity, and potential.
I am also proud that joy remains one of our core values. One thing I’ve learned is that people need more than support during difficult moments. They also need someone to celebrate their victories and efforts. Transformation is hard work, and every step forward deserves recognition.
When you walk into StepUp, I hope you experience both accountability and encouragement. We believe people can overcome barriers, and we are committed to walking alongside them as they do.
What’s next?
Personally, I want to continue growing as a leader, learner, and servant of the community. I am always looking for ways to expand my ability to create meaningful impact.
Professionally, I am incredibly excited about StepUp Ministry’s Rooted and Rising Capital Campaign and the construction of our future home.
The building itself is exciting, but what excites me most is what will happen inside it. Every classroom represents an opportunity for learning. Every coaching room represents an opportunity for transformation. Every community space represents an opportunity for connection and belonging.
The new facility will allow us to serve more individuals, strengthen more families, and deepen our impact throughout the community. For me, it is a tangible example of what happens when people come together around a shared vision.
We’re not simply building a facility. We’re building a place where people can discover purpose, overcome barriers, strengthen relationships, and create new possibilities for their future.
I believe the best chapters of StepUp’s story are still ahead of us, and I am grateful to be part of helping write them.
