Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean O’Malley.
Hi Sean, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for film started early. Disney movies as a kid, then comedies like Airplane!, Wayne’s World, and Napoleon Dynamite. But what really sparked my creative side was the rise of YouTube and early creators like Smosh, Nigahiga, and Rooster Teeth. I was borrowing my dad’s camcorder, making stupid little videos, editing Halo 3 montages. None of it felt like a career path at the time, just something I loved doing.
I went into college planning to study computer engineering, but creative work found its way back to me. Second semester at UNCW I joined the Flicker Film Society, got introduced to a community of people who actually believed in this industry, and ended up switching my major to Film Studies. Wilmington has a serious film scene, people call it Wilmywood for a reason, and being there put me right in the middle of it.
I interned at a Lighting and Grip rental house in Wilmington, and that’s where I truly fell in love with cinematography and lighting. That led to a few years of PA work on major productions like Swamp Thing, The Righteous Gemstones, and the Halloween reboots. Eventually I broke into the lighting department and joined IATSE 491 as a Set Electrician. Then in a full circle moment, I spent 2021 to 2022 working as a camera operator for the biggest YouTuber on the planet, MrBeast. I learned quite a lot about Social Media & attention during my time there.
In March of 2023 I launched Gold Oak Films, and shortly after became a fully licensed drone operator. Every step of that non-linear path shaped what Gold Oak Films is today. I bring a unique combination of traditional film training and modern content strategy, and I try to bridge the gap between high-end production and social media marketing. Great content doesn’t require a massive crew or the most expensive gear. It requires intention, craft, and a clear understanding of your audience. That’s what we bring to every project: high-quality, visually compelling video that helps brands tell their story and connect with the people they’re trying to reach.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Is it ever a smooth road for Small Business Owners? There are great months & there are most definitely bad months. The biggest obstacles for me have always been marketing myself & operating my business mostly solo, from Pre-Production all the way through the Edit & Final Delivery. Not knowing where that next paycheck is coming from is extremely stressful, but I’ve been fortunate enough thus far to be able to survive on just word of mouth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Gold Oak Films is a Raleigh-based video production company built around one core idea: that great video content should do more than look good. It should connect.
We specialize in brand videos, commercial production, and social media content for businesses that want to show up with intention. Every project we take on spans the full process, from concept and scripting to field production, post-production, and delivery. We also offer drone videography as part of our toolkit, and bring a performance-first mindset to everything we create, meaning we think about how the content will actually work in the wild, whether that’s a paid ad, a social post, or a broadcast spot.
What sets us apart is the combination of backgrounds that inform how we work. I came up through traditional film production, working union sets on major productions, and then spent a year operating camera for the largest YouTube channel in the world. That range gives Gold Oak Films something most production companies in this market don’t have: a deep understanding of both high-end craft and the realities of modern digital content. We know when a project calls for a full production approach and when smart, efficient execution will do the job better.
As for what we’re known for, our most recent work that stands out is the Seth Jarvis x Goodberry’s video, “Seth Jarvis Professional Taste Tester.” That piece is everything I love about this work. Goodberry’s has been a beloved Raleigh institution for 37 years, and getting to collaborate with Seth Jarvis, who helped bring the Stanley Cup back to this city, made it something really special. It’s the kind of content that feels meaningful because it is. Local, personal, and rooted in a community people actually care about.
That’s what I’m most proud of at Gold Oak Films. Not just the production quality, but the relationships and the stories behind the work. Serving local businesses means more to me than chasing larger corporate contracts, because when a small business wins, the whole community feels it.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about Raleigh is the growth mindset it has while also still being able to live slow. This city always feels like it’s moving forward, like there’s a collective investment in making it better for the people who live here. I also love how connected to nature it feels. Raleigh is genuinely green in a way that surprises people. There are beautiful parks tucked everywhere, and that balance between urban growth and natural space is something I don’t take for granted.
What I like least? The lack of a public rail system connecting the greater Triangle. For a region growing as fast as ours, it’s an obvious gap. We need it.
