Today we’d like to introduce you to Flo Lumsden.
Hi Flo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up on stage — theater, singing, dancing — so storytelling has always been my language. Along the way I got hooked on tech and innovation too, and spent my twenties figuring out how those loves fit together: interning on Capitol Hill, cold-calling for the car-sharing platform Getaround, even selling VR domes. Eventually I went back to school for video and audio production, because that was the work I actually wanted to do.
Then the pandemic hit, I’d just quit my job, and nobody was hiring. So I hustled small production gigs for local clients like Jess Averhart and Betteron in Durham — and landed on the idea that changed everything: podcasting for businesses, which had finally gotten affordable without sacrificing quality.
I started Chorus Studios in Raleigh in 2021, and I’ve spent the last four to five years building it up, now focused mostly on biotech and renewable energy clients. I love taking something technical and complicated and turning it into a story people actually want to hear. Most recently I launched Talk BIO to Me, interviewing fourteen scientists, founders, and VC’s at the SynBioBeta conference — such a blast to make.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not exactly smooth! At the start of the pandemic I’d just left an exciting VR job in LA, and suddenly nobody was hiring. I remember genuinely wondering where my career was going. I babysat to pay bills and made it my job to get out and network as much as possible. Slowly, I started meeting people and picking up work — not much money, but a start.
That rough patch lasted a year or two, and building Chorus Studios into what it is today took four to five years total. There was also a business lightbulb moment: I wanted to make high-quality video but couldn’t find clients with the budget for a full crew, and I didn’t want to release work I wasn’t proud of. That frustration pushed me toward podcasting — I realized the tech had advanced enough to make a great show on affordable gear, and it really just came down to good storytelling and editing. That changed everything. Now I’ve got a great roster of clients and I’m making a living doing work I love with people I like — a huge win.

Chorus Studios is a strategic podcast production and storytelling agency that helps innovative companies share complex ideas in a way people actually want to listen to.
We work primarily with organizations in biotech, climate tech, renewable energy, and other technology-driven industries, handling everything from strategy and interview coaching to recording, editing, video production, and distribution. Whether it’s a branded podcast, executive thought leadership, or conference content, our goal is to turn technical expertise into compelling stories that build trust, educate audiences, and grow brands.
What’s next?
Right now I’m creating more content than ever, especially in biotech, and my biggest focus is growing the audience around it.
Over the next year, I’d love to grow *Talk BIO to Me* into a self-sustaining show while continuing to establish myself as a trusted storyteller in the biotech space. I’m also excited to work with more companies in biotech and renewable energy because I genuinely believe these industries are going to define the coming decades.
I’m also beginning a much more personal project called **”Idio-What!?”** It’s inspired by my own experience with a rare jaw condition called idiopathic condylar resorption, which eventually led to total jaw joint replacement surgery. Before my diagnosis, I’d never met anyone who had even heard of the condition. Through the podcast, I want to document my recovery, interview patients, surgeons, researchers, and advocates, and build a community for people navigating rare diseases who often feel like they’re figuring it out alone. If sharing my story helps even one person get diagnosed sooner or feel less isolated, it’ll be worth it.
This September, I’ll be heading to New York for Climate Week and a podcasting festival happening around the same time. One thing I’ve learned is that whenever I invest in showing up—meeting people, having conversations, and staying curious—good things tend to happen. I never know exactly what opportunities will come from it, but they always do.
