Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Collier.
Hi Thomas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Before I was ever a DJ, I was a dancer. Growing up in Chicago, I spent countless hours on the dance floor, and that experience taught me something that’s still the foundation of everything I do today: great music isn’t just heard—it’s felt. As a dancer, I paid attention to how DJs could read a crowd, change the energy in a room, and create unforgettable moments. Watching that happen inspired me to learn the craft myself.
Once I got behind the turntables, I approached DJing from a dancer’s perspective. Instead of just playing songs, I focused on creating an experience that kept people moving. I dedicated myself to learning different genres, understanding what connects with audiences, and developing the ability to read a room. That philosophy has stayed with me throughout my career.
Over the years, I built the DJ House brand by remaining consistent, professional, and always putting the audience first. My style is open format, mixing everything from R&B, Hip-Hop, House, Reggae, Afrobeats and Pop to create an atmosphere where everyone feels included. I’ve had the opportunity to perform at community events, festivals, corporate functions, private celebrations, skating rinks, and radio, while traveling beyond North Carolina to entertain audiences wherever the music takes me.
Another important part of my journey has been radio broadcasting. Becoming an on-air personality, mix show DJ, and audio technician allowed me to share my passion for music with listeners beyond the dance floor. Whether I’m performing live, broadcasting a mix, or live streaming to people around the world, my mission is the same: bring people together through music.
Looking back, I never imagined that a kid who loved dancing in Chicago would one day become a DJ, radio personality, and entertainer whose work would be recognized by community organizations and the music industry. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited to see where the music takes me next.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entertainers, one of my biggest challenges came during the COVID-19 pandemic. Almost overnight, live events disappeared. The gigs stopped, the income stopped, and so did many of the networking opportunities that are essential in this business. It was a difficult time because, as a DJ, performing isn’t just how you earn a living—it’s how you stay connected with your audience and build relationships.
Instead of giving up, I used that time to sharpen my skills, invest in my brand, and prepare for when live events returned. Looking back, COVID taught me the importance of resilience, adapting to change, and never relying on just one opportunity. When the industry reopened, I was ready to get back to doing what I love with an even greater appreciation for every event and every client.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an open-format DJ, radio personality, and live event entertainer who specializes in creating memorable experiences through music. Whether I’m performing at a festival, corporate event, wedding, skating rink, private celebration, or broadcasting on the radio, my goal is always the same—to read the crowd, create the right energy, and make sure people leave with memories they’ll never forget.
Because I started as a dancer, I approach every performance from the audience’s perspective. I’m always watching the dance floor, paying attention to the energy in the room, and adjusting the music to keep people engaged. To me, DJing isn’t about playing my favorite songs—it’s about creating the perfect soundtrack for the people in front of me.
What I’m most proud of is earning the respect of both the music industry and my community over nearly three decades. I’ve been blessed to receive recognition throughout my career, including DJ of the Year from the Triangle Record Pool, an Appreciation Award from Columbia Records, recognition from the Capital City Steppers, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the Capital City Hope Foundation, and the City of Raleigh Museum for the 50 Years of Hip-Hop Recognition Award. Those moments weren’t just career highlights—they were reminders that music has the power to bring people together during historic occasions as well as everyday celebrations.
What truly sets me apart is my ability to connect with people. I can seamlessly blend House, Hip-Hop, R&B, Reggae, Afrobeats, and Pop while reading the room and adapting to the audience in real time. I believe every event deserves its own soundtrack, and I take pride in creating experiences that feel personal, energetic, and unforgettable. For me, success isn’t measured by how many songs I play—it’s measured by the smiles on the dance floor, the relationships I build, and the memories people take home with them.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that your reputation is your greatest asset. Talent may get you your first opportunity, but professionalism, reliability, and the way you treat people are what create lasting success. Every event matters, whether it’s for 20 people or 2,000.
I’ve also learned that success is a marathon, not a sprint. There will always be setbacks, slow seasons, and unexpected challenges, but if you stay consistent, continue learning, and always give your best, opportunities will come. Every performance is a chance to leave a lasting impression, and that’s a responsibility I never take for granted.
