Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Stanley.
Jess, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always had a love for hair and expressing myself. When I discovered I could make it a career, I knew I had to try.
I strongly believe every single person in the world is beautiful in their own way. A lot of people struggle seeing themselves the same way people see them. It’s hard for people to not be critical of themselves.
I love helping people and when I discovered I could help people feel beautiful and confident in their own skin, I never went back.
Expressing your individuality through hair, makeup, and style is what life is all about. I personally believe life is too short to worry about what other people think. If you want purple hair, have purple hair. Be bold. Be you.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think any career has a smooth road. In the beginning I felt like I struggled with imposter syndrome white a lot (and still do on occasion)
The beauty industry can be cut throat. The typical standards are outdated and not conducive to a long term career. You have to make your career what you want it to be.
I’ve worked really hard at cultivating a space within my chair that people feel welcomed, heard, and understood.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a hairstylist who works with a lot of curly girlies and fashion color!
Fashion color is basically any color that does not occur in hair naturally. The rainbow gives you lots of options for your hair!
Bold colored hair is one of the biggest confidence boosters. When I started coloring my hair fun colors, I noticed how much more confident I felt in my skin. I often see that transformation in guests in my chair as well.
Curly girlies have been underserved in the beauty industry for so long. When I started cosmetology school, one of my biggest goals was to understand curly hair. My entire family (including myself) have curly hair.
Since curly hair has been misunderstood for so long, guests were unfortunately getting haircuts that did not enhance the natural beauty of their curls.
I’ve worked with several curly educators and I have been certified as a devacurl stylist so I can create works of art for my curly guests. It is always satisfying to watch a guest light up in the mirror when they see what their curls can really do!
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Family is the most important thing to me. It’s important to have a solid foundation and to know someone always has your back.
On your bad days, family should be your ‘I’m at home and everything is ok’ feeling.
I’m close with my little sister and have had the honor of watching her become an amazing aunt to my daughter and it makes me proud to have that connection with her.
