Today we’d like to introduce you to Shruti Desai.
Shruti, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into real estate actually started because of my parents. After graduating from college, they encouraged me to talk with some of their best friends, who happened to own a successful RE/MAX office in Raleigh. At the time, I wasn’t exactly sure what career path I wanted to take, but after meeting with them, I knew I had found something that truly excited me.
While attending real estate school, I interned with their team at RE/MAX, soaking up as much knowledge as I could. I shadowed experienced agents, attended appointments, helped wherever I was needed, and learned the business from the ground up before I even earned my license. Looking back, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start my career.
I earned my real estate license 20 years ago and spent my first eight years as part of that RE/MAX team. It was an incredible learning experience that taught me not only the ins and outs of real estate but also the importance of relationships, integrity, and putting clients first.
As my career grew, I decided to take the leap and build my own business as an independent RE/MAX agent. It was both exciting and a little scary, but it allowed me to create a business that reflected my own style and values. Today, my business is built largely on referrals and repeat clients, which is something I’m incredibly grateful for.
Being a NC native makes what I do even more meaningful. I’ve had the privilege of watching our community grow over the years, and I love helping people find not just the right house, but the right place to call home. Years later, I still genuinely love what I do. Every client, every story, and every transaction is different, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have a career that allows me to make such a meaningful impact in people’s lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think anyone’s career is completely smooth, and real estate is no exception. Like any profession, there are highs and lows, but what makes real estate unique is that no two transactions are ever the same. Every home has its own story, every property presents different challenges, and every client is navigating a different chapter in life.
For many people, buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial decisions they’ll ever make. At the same time, they’re often experiencing major life events such as buying their first home, getting married, welcoming a baby, relocating for a new job, going through a divorce, or grieving the loss of a loved one. As REALTORS®, we’re not just helping with contracts and negotiations; we’re also helping people through some of life’s biggest transitions.
I’ve experienced some major shifts in the real estate market. I started my career before the 2008 recession and learned firsthand how to adapt during one of the most challenging housing markets in history. Then came COVID, which brought a completely different set of challenges. Almost overnight, the market shifted into one of the busiest and most competitive markets we’ve ever seen.
Those experiences taught me to stay calm under pressure, think creatively, and adapt when circumstances change. They also reinforced that success in this business isn’t about following the same formula every time. It’s about listening, problem-solving, and finding the best path forward for each individual client. Looking back, those challenging seasons didn’t just make me a better REALTOR®; they made me a stronger and more resilient person.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At the heart of my business is a simple philosophy: I treat my clients the way I would want my own family to be treated. Real estate is about so much more than contracts and closing dates, it’s about helping people through one of the biggest decisions and transitions of their lives.
I’m a very hands-on agent. If that means helping organize a home before photos, rearranging furniture, painting, spreading mulch, or tackling a last-minute project before a listing goes live, I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves. I also believe in giving my clients honest advice, even if that means telling them I don’t think they should move forward with selling or purchasing a home. My priority is helping them make the best decision for their situation, not simply getting to the closing table.
Serving my community goes far beyond real estate. I serve on the North State Bank Advisory Board and am a board member of the Realtor Giving Network (RGN), where we support local organizations throughout Wake County, including The Women’s Center, The Carying Place, CASA, and many others. I’m also a wish granter with Make-A-Wish and love fostering dogs through local rescue organizations.
I’m most proud that my business has grown largely through repeat clients and referrals. To me, that’s the greatest compliment—it means someone trusted me not only with their own home, but enough to recommend me to someone they care about. I want my brand to be known for showing up, helping wherever I can, and giving back to the community that has given so much to me.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way to support my business is simply by keeping me in mind when someone you know is thinking about buying, selling, or relocating to the Triangle. Referrals have always been the heart of my business, and I’m incredibly grateful for the trust my clients, friends, and community continue to place in me.
I also love connecting with local businesses, nonprofits, and other professionals who are passionate about making Raleigh a great place to live. Whether it’s collaborating on community events, supporting local causes, or highlighting small businesses on social media, I’m always looking for ways to build meaningful relationships and give back.
If you’d like to follow along, you can find me on social media, where I share local spots, real estate tips, behind-the-scenes moments, and a little bit of everyday life. My goal is to be more than just someone’s REALTOR®. I want to be a trusted resource and a positive part of our community.
