Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Fear.
Hi Amy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My passion for veterinary medicine began in high school while volunteering at the veterinary clinic that cared for my family’s cat to earn National Honor Society service hours. During that time, I became deeply invested in the care of my own cat, Simba, whose battle with chronic kidney disease ultimately inspired my desire to pursue a career dedicated to helping animals and the people who love them.
I attended North Carolina State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with a minor in Microbiology in 2011. I then graduated in 2016 from the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on small animal medicine.
After graduation, I interviewed with several local practices before joining Complete Pet Care Animal Hospital. What I expected to be my first job has become my professional home for the past ten years. I have been fortunate to learn from exceptional mentors, build lasting relationships with an incredible team, and practice in an environment that allows me to provide compassionate, high-quality care while balancing the demands of a busy family life.
Today, I live in Apex, North Carolina, with my husband, our three children, ages 9, 6, and 3, and our two rescued companions—a Bluetick Hound mix named Finn and a cat named Poppy. I feel incredibly grateful to spend each day caring for pets while helping strengthen the bond they share with their families.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My path to veterinary school wasn’t a straight line—I was waitlisted during my first application cycle and ultimately was not admitted that year. Rather than becoming discouraged, I used the experience as motivation to strengthen my application by working at a small animal specialty surgical practice and by gaining additional experience through shadowing veterinarians in multiple specialties, including equine medicine. The following year, I was accepted into the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, where I graduated in 2016 with a focus on small animal medicine.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a small animal general practitioner, I have a special interest in preventive medicine and strengthening the human-animal bond. I believe that one of the most rewarding aspects of veterinary medicine is partnering with pet owners to help their companions live longer, healthier, and happier lives.
Throughout my career, I have been especially proud of the relationships I have built with both my clients and the team I work alongside. Veterinary medicine can be a demanding profession, and long-standing, collaborative teams are becoming increasingly uncommon. I consider myself fortunate to work with a group of dedicated professionals who share a commitment to exceptional patient care and support one another every day.
