Summer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
LocoPops started with a trip to Tlazazalca, Mexico, where I learned how to make traditional Mexican-style popsicles, known as paletas. When I was deciding where to open my own shop, I happened to stop for gas in Durham during a road trip. It was one of those unexpected moments where a place just feels right. I opened LocoPops over Memorial Day weekend in 2005, and we’ve been part of the Durham community ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any small business, the road hasn’t always been smooth, but each challenge has ultimately pushed us in a direction that made us stronger. One of the biggest turning points came during COVID. As fewer people wanted to make trips to the grocery store, we started carrying local pantry staples like fresh bread, coffee, and beans to help meet our community’s needs.
What began as a way to support our neighbors during a difficult time gradually evolved into something much bigger. People loved being able to pick up locally made essentials alongside their favorite pops, and over time we expanded our offerings. Today, we’re proud to be known not only for our popsicles and ice cream, but also for our curated selection of products from local vendors, bakeries and farms. Looking back, what felt like a challenge at the time ended up opening the door to an exciting new chapter for us.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
While we’re best known for our handcrafted frozen treats, we’re equally passionate about creating a gathering space for Durham. We love partnering with local organizations, hosting family-friendly events, and supporting other small businesses by featuring products from local bakers, makers, and farms. Whether someone stops in for a treat, attends one of our community events, or discovers a new local favorite, we hope they leave feeling a little more connected to Durham than when they arrived.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One thing that surprises people is where the name LocoPops came from. When I told my parents I was going to open a popsicle shop, they thought I’d completely lost my mind. They joked that I’d “gone loco,” and the name stuck!
