Today we’d like to introduce you to Rita Brewer.
Hi Rita, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
This is on the About page of my website:
Lifestyle, Obesity & Functional Medicine | Metabolic Health & Diabetes Reversal
Helping Patients Reverse Chronic Metabolic Disease Through Evidence-Based Lifestyle Medicine
From a young age, I knew I was called to a career in medicine. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the State University of New York at Geneseo and completed my Physician Assistant training at Cornell University Medical College.
I bring 35 years of clinical experience in obesity medicine, surgical specialties, conventional medicine, integrative care, and functional medicine. Throughout my career, I treated the most severe complications of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, including non-healing ulcers, vascular disease requiring bypass surgery, chronic wound infections, amputations, strokes, dementia, and heart attacks. I cared for patients who were blind, on dialysis, or living with diabetes-related amputations. These experiences permanently shaped my approach to healthcare.
Over time, I came to a sobering realization: much of this suffering was preventable. Patients were rarely taught how to improve metabolic health, address insulin resistance, or use food and lifestyle as powerful medical tools. This realization led me to become board certified in Lifestyle Medicine and dedicate my career to addressing the root causes of chronic disease rather than simply managing symptoms.
I have since witnessed, repeatedly and firsthand, how evidence-based lifestyle interventions can help reverse or dramatically improve type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, and other chronic metabolic disorders.
Because lifestyle-based, root-cause care is often missing from conventional healthcare, I opened my own clinic to support patients with chronic metabolic conditions through comprehensive Lifestyle, Obesity, and Functional Medicine. My clinic serves patients in Raleigh, North Carolina, and via telemedicine for patients across North Carolina, offering a personalized and supportive approach to long-term metabolic health.
Each patient receives an individualized care plan that may include nutrition therapy, physical activity guidance, sleep optimization, stress management, behavior change coaching, lab testing and medical therapy when indicated. I use tools such as continuous glucose monitoring to provide real-time insight and data-driven personalization, empowering patients to understand how their body responds to food, movement, stress, and sleep.
When appropriate, I also support patients using GLP-1 medications and other anti obesity medications as part of a comprehensive metabolic health strategy, always emphasizing sustainable lifestyle change and long-term success. My treatment plans improves insulin sensitivity, reduce medication dependence when appropriate, achieve sustainable weight loss, and restore energy and vitality.
My mission is to educate, equip, and empower patients to reclaim their health and live free from preventable chronic disease.
It would be my honor and privilege to partner with you on your journey to optimal metabolic health.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Healthcare has never been an easy profession, and that’s one of the reasons I find it so rewarding. Throughout my career, I’ve faced many challenges, from the years of education and training required to enter the profession to the long hours, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call responsibilities that are simply part of caring for others.
One of the greatest challenges today, however, is our healthcare system itself. Too often, providers are expected to see an overwhelming number of patients in very short appointment times. This high-volume model contributes to burnout and leaves many clinicians feeling they cannot provide the level of care their patients truly deserve. It can also leave patients feeling rushed, unheard, and treated like a number rather than a person.
Rather than accepting that as the norm, I chose a different path. I built my own practice so I could spend the time necessary to understand each patient’s unique story, educate them about their health, and develop a personalized plan that addresses the root causes of disease—not just the symptoms. While that decision came with its own challenges, it has allowed me to practice medicine in a way that aligns with my values and ultimately provides better care for my patients.
Every obstacle I’ve encountered has reinforced why I entered healthcare in the first place: to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
We’ve been impressed with Rita Brewer Consulting, PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Please tell us more about your business or organization. What should we know?
At Rita Brewer Consulting, I help people move beyond simply managing chronic disease to creating lasting health. My practice combines evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine, Functional Medicine, and Obesity Medicine to identify and address the root causes of metabolic disease rather than just treating symptoms.
With more than 35 years of clinical experience as a Physician Associate, I’ve cared for patients across multiple medical specialties and witnessed the devastating consequences of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic illnesses. Those experiences inspired me to create a practice focused on prevention, restoration, and helping people reclaim their health before complications occur.
After more than 35 years in healthcare, I’ve learned that some of the most powerful medicine isn’t found in a prescription bottle—it’s helping people change the daily habits that determine their long-term health.
I believe every patient deserves individualized care, education, and the tools to become an active participant in their own health journey.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, and what are you known for?
I specialize in helping adults struggling with obesity, insulin resistance, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, metabolic dysfunction, and other chronic health conditions that often improve with intensive lifestyle intervention.
My practice integrates personalized nutrition, exercise, sleep optimization, stress management, behavior change coaching, appropriate pharmacotherapy when indicated, advanced metabolic testing, and Functional Medicine principles to create customized treatment plans for each individual.
I am known for taking the time to truly listen to my patients, educating them about the “why” behind their health challenges, and providing the accountability and support they need to achieve lasting results—not just temporary success. My patients don’t receive a generic treatment plan—they receive a roadmap tailored specifically to their goals, lifestyle, and medical needs.
What sets you apart from others?
One of the greatest advantages of owning my own practice is that I can spend the time my patients deserve. Neither of us wants to feel rushed through an appointment. My patients receive high-quality, personalized care where they are known by name—not by a chart number.
I believe meaningful lifestyle change requires conversation, education, trust, and partnership. That simply can’t happen in a rushed office visit. I take the time to understand each person’s story, health history, lifestyle, goals, and challenges so we can develop a realistic plan they can actually sustain.
As the obesity and chronic disease epidemics continue to rise, my mission is to help patients become as healthy as possible by addressing the root causes of disease through nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, behavior change, and, when appropriate, evidence-based medications. Whenever it is medically appropriate, one of my goals is to help patients improve their health enough to reduce their dependence on prescription medications by treating the underlying causes of disease—not simply managing symptoms.
My practice is designed to complement the care provided by primary care physicians and specialists. Today’s healthcare providers often have limited time because of increasing patient demands and administrative responsibilities. My advanced training in Lifestyle Medicine and Functional Medicine allows me to provide the intensive education, coaching, and ongoing support that many patients need—but often don’t have access to—in a traditional medical setting.
Perhaps what sets me apart most is that I don’t just treat diseases—I teach people how to become healthier. My goal is to empower every patient with the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to take control of their health for the rest of their lives.
What are you most proud of, brand-wise?
I’m most proud that my practice represents hope.
Many of my patients come to me feeling discouraged after years of unsuccessful diets, conflicting health advice, or being told they’ll simply need more medications as they get older. Watching them regain their energy, lose weight, improve their laboratory values, reduce medications when appropriate, and rediscover confidence in their health is incredibly rewarding.
My brand is built on compassion, education, empowerment, and genuine relationships. Every patient deserves to feel heard, valued, and supported—not rushed through an appointment. I want each person who walks through my door to know they matter and that they have a healthcare partner who is fully invested in helping them succeed.
What do you want readers to know about your brand, offerings, and services?
I want readers to know that improving your health is possible at any stage of life.
Whether someone wants to lose weight, prevent or manage diabetes, improve metabolic health, reduce their risk of chronic disease, or simply regain the energy to enjoy life again, my practice offers personalized, science-based care that meets patients where they are. There is no one-size-fits-all approach because every patient is unique.
Health isn’t about perfection—it’s about making sustainable changes that create lasting results. My mission is to empower people with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to take control of their health, reduce their reliance on medications whenever appropriate, and live longer, healthier, more vibrant lives.
My philosophy is simple: Healthcare should be personal. Patients should never feel like a number, never feel rushed, and never lose hope that they can improve their health. When people are given the right knowledge, the right support, and enough time, extraordinary transformations are possible.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Yes, I consider myself a calculated risk-taker—but only when it comes to my own life and career, never when it comes to my patients.
Some of the biggest risks I’ve taken include leaving the security of traditional employment to build my own practice and investing in advanced training in Lifestyle and Functional Medicine. Those decisions required faith, hard work, and a willingness to step outside my comfort zone, but they allowed me to create a practice where I can spend the time each patient deserves and provide truly personalized care.
When it comes to patient care, however, my philosophy is completely different. My patients trust me with their health, and that responsibility is something I never take lightly. Every recommendation I make is grounded in evidence, sound clinical judgment, and more than 35 years of experience. I believe innovation is important, but patient safety always comes first.
For me, success isn’t about taking reckless risks—it’s about having the courage to pursue meaningful opportunities while remaining steadfast in the responsibility to provide the highest quality care.
