Conversations with Samantha Winship

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Winship.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always believed that nature has a way of guiding us where we’re meant to be. My journey started with becoming a beekeeper, but it quickly became so much more than caring for bees. The hive taught me about patience, stewardship, and the importance of protecting the land while creating something meaningful for my community.

As my passion grew, I created the Granny Studio—a space where people can slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the healing gifts of the hive through education, wellness, and hands-on experiences. Along the way, I found my true calling in apitherapy. I began to see the hive as a living medicine cabinet, where every part of it—from honey and propolis to royal jelly, beeswax, and bee venom—has a purpose and a story to tell.

Returning to cosmetology and becoming an esthetician felt like coming full circle. It gave me the opportunity to combine my love of natural healing with professional skin care, allowing me to create holistic treatments that support the skin barrier using bee-derived ingredients and other nature-based modalities. My goal has never been just to offer skincare—it’s to educate people about the connection between healthy skin, healthy ecosystems, and overall wellness.

Today, my work brings together beekeeping, apitherapy, esthetics, and land stewardship in a way that feels authentic to who I am. Whether I’m teaching about the hive, creating botanical skincare, or welcoming someone into the Granny Studio, my mission is to help people rediscover the wisdom of nature and see the hive as more than a source of honey—it’s a living medicine cabinet that has inspired my life’s work.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped who I am today. Like many small business owners, one of the biggest struggles has been balancing the passion for the work with the reality of keeping everything running. Building something from the ground up takes persistence, long hours, and a willingness to keep creating even when the path isn’t clear.

Beekeeping itself teaches resilience. No matter how much knowledge or preparation you have, there are seasons of loss. Losing hives can be heartbreaking, but it also reminds you to respect nature, adapt, and keep learning. Those experiences have made me a better beekeeper and a better steward of the land.

Another challenge has been finding my own path instead of following what everyone else was doing. I’ve learned to trust my instincts, blend my passions for beekeeping, apitherapy, and esthetics, and build something that reflects who I am rather than fitting into someone else’s definition of success.

Looking back, I realize the struggles were just as important as the victories. They taught me patience, perseverance, and the confidence to stay true to my mission of serving my community through education, holistic wellness, and the incredible gifts of the hive.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work sits at the intersection of beekeeping, apitherapy, esthetics, and environmental stewardship. Through the Granny Studio, I educate people about the incredible value of the hive while offering holistic wellness experiences and topical skincare rooted in both traditional knowledge and modern skin science. I specialize in incorporating bee-derived ingredients such as honey, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax, and bee venom into skincare, always with a focus on supporting the skin barrier and overall wellness.

One of the things I’m most proud of is creating my own path. Rather than fitting into one category, I’ve brought together my backgrounds in beekeeping, cosmetology, esthetics, herbalism, and education to create something that is uniquely my own. Whether I’m teaching a workshop, mentoring future beekeepers, speaking at conferences, or developing skincare, my goal is always to help people see the hive differently—not just as a source of honey, but as a living medicine cabinet that has so much to offer when treated with respect.

What sets me apart is my commitment to connecting people back to nature. I believe healthy skin begins with a healthy environment, and I strive to show how caring for pollinators, protecting the land, and understanding the science behind bee products can all work together. My work is deeply rooted in education, community, and stewardship, and I’m especially passionate about making this knowledge accessible while inspiring the next generation to appreciate both the bees and the ecosystems they support.

More than anything, I hope people leave my classes, treatments, or talks with a renewed sense of wonder—understanding that the hive isn’t just something we harvest from, but something we learn from.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing that surprises people is that I returned to school to become an esthetician after years of working as a beekeeper and apitherapist. Most people see those as completely different worlds, but to me they naturally belong together. My goal has always been to understand how the gifts of the hive can support healthy skin, so going back to cosmetology and expanding into esthetics felt like a full-circle moment rather than a career change.

Another surprise is that I don’t just keep bees—I spend as much time listening to them as I do working with them. I believe the hive has something to teach us about resilience, community, and balance, and that philosophy influences everything I create, from skincare to education.

People are also often surprised that my work isn’t really about honey. While honey is incredible, I’m fascinated by the entire hive. I see it as a living medicine cabinet, where every bee product has a purpose and every season brings a new lesson. That’s the perspective that has shaped both my business and my life.
