Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Moore.
Hi Alexis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Photography has always been a part of my life. Before I ever thought about making it a career, I was the kid who always had a camera. Growing up on the west side of Charlotte, I was either playing softball or carrying a camera. My godmom bought me my first digital camera when I was in the eighth grade, and I took it everywhere. Years later, my mom bought me my first film camera, which deepened my love for photography and challenged me to see storytelling in a completely different way.
I’ve always loved photography because it allows me to preserve memories. A single photo can take you back to a moment in time and tell a story without saying a word. Even at a young age, I knew there was something special about capturing life through my own perspective.
That passion continued to grow when I attended Shaw University, where I studied Mass Communications. Shaw holds a very special place in my heart because it helped shape the woman I am today. It was there that I found myself, discovered my purpose, and realized photography wasn’t just something I loved—it was something I was called to pursue.
Being surrounded by creative classmates inspired me every day, but one person who especially motivated me was my friend Troy Thomas. He had already started his own photography business while we were in school, and watching him build his brand showed me that photography could become more than just a hobby.
I was also blessed to have incredible professors and mentors who believed in me. Professor Schuler played a major role in encouraging me to continue pursuing photography and trust my creative vision. Her belief in me gave me the confidence to keep growing as an artist. Dr. Jolisa Williams also had a tremendous impact on my journey. She encouraged me to take photography seriously and gave me opportunities to shoot basketball games, write stories, and step outside of my comfort zone during my internship. Those experiences helped me grow not only as a photographer but also as a storyteller.
Another person who holds a special place in my heart is Dr. Kimberly Miller, who I first knew as Coach Kim. She gave me an opportunity to compete at the collegiate level at Shaw University and believed in me beyond athletics. Her support, leadership, and belief in me helped shape my confidence and my journey, and I’ll always be grateful for the impact she had on my life.
I’m especially honored to be featured in this magazine because Raleigh will always have a special place in my heart. My years at Shaw University weren’t just about earning a degree—they were about becoming the person I was meant to be. Raleigh and Shaw helped me discover who I was, what I wanted to do, and gave me the confidence to chase my dreams. The city, the university, my professors, coaches, classmates, and experiences all played a part in shaping the photographer and storyteller I am today.
Today, photography is about much more than taking pictures. It’s about preserving memories, creating genuine connections, and telling authentic stories through my lens. Every time I pick up a camera, I want people to feel something when they see my work. Looking back, it all started with a little girl from the west side of Charlotte who loved softball, carried a camera everywhere she went, and simply wanted to capture moments that would last forever. I’m grateful that passion has grown into a purpose, and I can’t wait to see where this journey continues to take me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. The road has been anything but smooth, and I think that’s what makes my story so meaningful. I’ve been told “no” more times than I can count, and there were plenty of moments when I questioned whether I should keep going. To be completely transparent, there were times I wanted to quit photography altogether.
One of the hardest seasons of my life came after my brother passed away. I lost my passion for creating, and I stepped away from my camera because I just wasn’t myself. I didn’t know if I would ever find that same love for photography again. During that time, my faith in God carried me. I truly believe I had to surrender everything and trust that He still had a purpose for my life, even when I couldn’t see it.
A turning point came when artist Mýa gave me the opportunity to photograph her. Shortly after, I was selected to photograph Kirk Franklin in concert. Those opportunities reignited the fire in me. The photos I captured of Mýa especially the images of her in the classic jersey dress went viral and reminded me why I fell in love with photography in the first place. I’ll always give Mýa her flowers because she believed in me at a time when I was trying to believe in myself again.
I’ve also learned that you can’t do this journey alone. Some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned came from people who were willing to pour into me. Tony and Cannon from The Photo Outfit in Charlotte became like family. They taught me so much about lighting, equipment, and the technical side of photography. I’d also like to recognize photographers Shot By Lindsey and Sean Wick. They inspired me, answered my questions, and showed me the importance of always being willing to learn from others.
Looking back, every setback, every “no,” every loss, and every difficult season shaped me into the photographer I am today. I’m grateful for everyone who believed in me, especially during the moments when I was at my lowest. Those experiences taught me resilience, strengthened my faith, and reminded me that purpose is often found on the other side of perseverance.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Alexis Photography is more than a photography brand it’s a storytelling brand. My mission is to preserve moments, create lasting memories, and tell authentic stories through my lens. I specialize in concert photography, live events, portraits, sports, lifestyle photography, and film photography.
What sets me apart is my approach to storytelling. I don’t just take pictures I capture emotion, energy, and genuine moments. Whether I’m photographing an artist on stage, a family, an athlete, or a community event, I want every image to make people feel like they were there.
One of the things I’m most proud of is helping keep film photography alive. In a world where everything is instant and digital, I enjoy slowing the process down and creating intentional work on film. There’s something special about knowing you only have one chance to capture the perfect frame, and that challenge has made me a stronger photographer. While I love shooting film, I also work in digital photography, allowing me to tell stories through both mediums.
I’m also proud of the relationships I’ve built over the years. I’ve had the opportunity to photograph incredible artists, organizations, and people from all walks of life. Every opportunity reminds me that photography isn’t just about the image it’s about creating connections, building trust, and preserving memories that people will cherish for years to come.
At the heart of my brand is creating an experience. When someone works with Alexis Photography, they’re getting more than a photographer they’re getting someone who genuinely cares about their story and wants to capture moments they’ll be able to relive for a lifetime. My goal is simple: to create timeless images, meaningful memories, and tell stories that will live on for generations.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
If I had to choose one quality, it would be perseverance. Photography has taught me that success doesn’t happen overnight. There have been moments of doubt, setbacks, and opportunities that didn’t work out, but I’ve learned to keep showing up, stay consistent, and trust the process.
I also believe my faith has been a huge part of my journey. My faith has kept me grounded during difficult seasons and reminded me that every “no” is often leading to the right “yes.” Another thing that’s been important to my success is prioritizing my mental health. Having a good therapist has helped me navigate life’s challenges, process difficult moments, and continue showing up as the best version of myself both personally and professionally.
Combined with a willingness to keep learning, remain humble, and pour my heart into every opportunity, those qualities have helped shape both my career and the person I am today.
No matter where this journey takes me, I want to be remembered as someone who never gave up, stayed true to herself, and used her gift to create meaningful memories for others.
