Today we’d like to introduce you to Na’tia Felton.
Hi Na’tia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After the birth of our third child, I found myself deeply immersed in the role of a stay-at-home mom. Amidst the joyful chaos of raising a toddler, a newborn, and two school-aged children, I noticed a shift; I wasn’t taking the time to get dressed every day. It wasn’t necessarily postpartum depression, but I felt the need to reclaim a part of myself that had been overshadowed by the demands of motherhood.
To breathe life back into my routine, I began exploring makeup through YouTube tutorials. At first, my attempts were far from perfect, and I often laughed at my own reflections. But the desire to improve pushed me forward. I enjoyed the creative process and cherished those moments of transformation.
Then came our fourth child, and once again, my makeup brushes were set aside as I navigated life with a newborn and her siblings, balancing their needs with my own. It wasn’t long before I felt the pull of creativity again. Gradually, I returned to makeup, honing my skills to the point where family members began to ask for my help. Friends and strangers alike started complimenting my work; a simple trip to the store or grabbing a coffee often turned into impromptu consultations.
My husband, encouraged me to consider freelancing. With his encouragement, I set up a StyleSeat account. To my surprise and delight, I had my first client within a week. That experience marked the beginning of a new chapter for me.
A year into freelancing, I booked my first wedding, doing makeup for seven ladies. The experience was exhilarating, and it solidified my passion for the bridal industry. Since 2022, I’ve had the privilege of being part of numerous weddings, transforming brides on their special day.
The journey has been challenging, balancing family and work, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding. Through makeup, I’ve rediscovered myself and found a fulfilling career that brings out the confidence and beauty in others. It’s a reminder that even in the busiest seasons of life, there’s always room to grow and pursue one’s passion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Balancing the roles of a freelancer and a full-time mom has certainly not been without its challenges. One of the primary struggles was managing time. With four children, including a toddler and a newborn, daily life was a whirlwind of activities, from school drop-offs and pickups to managing nap times and extracurricular activities. Fitting in freelance work often meant late nights and early mornings, carving out moments to schedule client consultations and meticulously plan for upcoming bookings.
Logistics presented another hurdle. As my freelance makeup business grew, so did the amount of equipment I needed to carry for each job. Traveling to client locations meant lugging heavy bags filled with makeup kits, lighting equipment, and chairs—all essential for creating the perfect on-site setup. This added physical strain was something I had to navigate, often juggling my own kit along with baby bags and school supplies.
Additionally, the unpredictability of freelancing, fluctuating school schedules , added another layer of complexity to our family life. There were times when a last-minute booking would require rearranging family plans or finding quick childcare solutions, all while ensuring I stayed organized and professional for my clients.
Despite these challenges, the support of my family and the passion I had for my work kept me going. Each obstacle taught me the importance of flexibility, resilience, and the value of a reliable support system. My mom and husband would come assist me at weddings sometimes and that was a huge help. These experiences not only shaped my career but also strengthened my ability to balance personal and professional life, ultimately leading to a rewarding and successful journey in the bridal makeup industry.
