Meet Sebastian Martinez of North Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Martinez.

Hi Sebastian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Five years ago, my wife and I came to this country with nothing but big dreams in our suitcases.

In 2023, I started @studiosmtwo. After working through so many fears and doubts, I finally decided to take the leap, make the business official, and turn my dreams into reality. I wanted my passion for telling stories through photography to become something real.

At first, photography was simply a way for me to explore my creativity and learn. But little by little, I began to understand that a great photograph isn’t just about creating a beautiful image. It’s about creating an experience and telling a story. Most importantly, it’s about connecting with people—making them feel comfortable, confident, and genuinely enjoy the experience you’ve created for them.

Over time, I developed my own style while learning about lighting, directing, editing, and, above all, how to work with people and brands to turn their ideas into images that truly represent who they are. What started as a personal project gradually grew into a photography business offering everything from portraits and family sessions to maternity, birthday, and commercial product photography.

The past few weeks have been especially chaotic. My family, major life changes, a move, changes in our immigration status, and, more recently, dedicating myself fully to photography while being present for my son Oliver have completely changed the way I see this project.

Today, @studiosmtwo is in a much more intentional chapter. I don’t simply want to take photographs anymore; I want to create meaningful experiences that make people feel something and help individuals and brands tell their stories and show the world who they are.

Now, I’m building Studio SM2 from Durham, North Carolina, with the goal of continuing to grow, collaborating with incredible people and businesses, and turning photography into a tool for telling stories that truly matter.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a journey of highs and lows, filled with fears, challenges, and many moments of uncertainty. Some of the biggest challenges were finding my way in a country I didn’t know, starting from scratch, making myself visible, and overcoming the language barrier. But without a doubt, one of the biggest challenges I faced was imposter syndrome.

For a long time, I compared myself to other photographers—their results, their clients, and where they were in their careers. Without realizing it, I was losing sight of the most important part: enjoying the process. The process of creating, learning, making mistakes, starting over, putting in the work, and, most importantly, enjoying every second of the journey.

I remember my first year being, in many ways, a year of exploration and learning. I had the opportunity to work with a group of real estate agents, an experience that allowed me to learn a great deal about that industry while also helping me discover what kind of photography I truly wanted to pursue.

That experience was fundamental. It taught me that I didn’t have to do everything or compare myself to everyone else. I needed to find my own path, trust my process, and give my passion a clear direction.

And that’s how, little by little, I realized that I wanted to dedicate myself fully to photography.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At @studiosmtwo, we are a photography business focused on creating meaningful images and experiences for individuals, families, and brands.

We work across different areas of photography, including portraits, weddings, families, maternity, birthdays, branding, and commercial product photography. While our work may look very different from one session to another, there is one thing that always remains the same: our intention is to tell a story and create an experience that feels personal and authentic.

We especially love working with people who may not feel completely comfortable in front of a camera. We believe great photography begins long before we press the shutter. For us, it starts with the very first video call—creating an environment where people feel comfortable, confident, at ease, and free to be themselves. Our job is not simply to direct and photograph, but also to make the entire experience enjoyable.

When we work with brands, our goal goes beyond simply showcasing a product. We want to understand the brand, its personality, its audience, and what it wants people to feel when they see its images. From there, we translate all of that into intentional, creative photography that is aligned with its identity.

What sets us apart is the way we approach photography. We don’t want to create images simply because they look beautiful. We want every image to have a purpose. Whether we’re photographing a family, an expecting mother, a birthday celebration, or a product, we look for the story, the emotion, and the details that make each person or brand unique.

What I’m most proud of is seeing how much this dream has grown. It started as a personal project born from my passion for photography and has become something that represents my creativity, my values, and the way I want to connect with people. I’m proud not only of the photographs we’ve created, but also of the trust people place in us to capture important moments, represent their brands, and become part of their stories.

Today, I see @studiosmtwo as so much more than a photography business. It’s a place where creativity, storytelling, and human connection come together. And that’s exactly what I want people to remember when they work with us.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
