Life & Work with Deanna Decker of North Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Decker.

Hi Deanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I like to say that my photography journey began the day I became a mother. While I had learned the technical side of using a camera in college, the thought of portrait photography as a career never crossed my mind until I had my own little muse to constantly document. Before long, friends and family had convinced me to take photos of their children, and by the time my daughter was walking, I was officially taking my first clients. Now, almost 15 years later, I’ve had the privilege of working with thousands of families, and I still can’t believe that I get to do this as a full time career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every journey has its bumps in the road, and mine is no exception. My struggle has always been balancing business ownership with the rest of life. Being a portrait photographer is the easy part — being a secretary, stylist, web designer, content creator, marketing manager, bookkeeper, and juggler-of-all-things? Not so much.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
While I do it all, from business and branding portraits to the occasional wedding, I am best known for my timeless, colorful and creative children’s portraits. I love documenting adolescence in all its seasons, which is why my themed portrait events have become my favorite part of this business. These events, all designed around unique experiences and inspired by nature, have become annual traditions for families all around North Carolina. The opportunity to work with clients again and again, and the legacies they’ll leave behind, comprised of my images, are what I’m most proud of.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory isn’t a moment, it’s a feeling.
The freedom of a bike ride to the river. The smell of fresh sheets hanging on the laundry line. The safety of my mother’s arms. The anticipation of Christmas morning. The sound of my family all gathered together in one place.

Those are the feelings I want to bottle up in a gallery for every one of my clients.
