Community Highlights: Meet Breana Ruelas of Morning Glory Café

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breana Ruelas.

Breana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our story has definitely evolved since the last time we were featured! At that time, we were operating as Short & Sweet, a mobile food trailer specializing in craft beverages and Coffee. What started as a small idea grew into something that taught us so much, not only about food and business, but about what we really loved most: creating a place where people could gather, feel welcome, and enjoy good food together.

Over time, that vision became bigger than the trailer. Short & Sweet is still the LLC behind our business, but today most people know us as Morning Glory Café in Newton, North Carolina.

Morning Glory gave us the opportunity to expand beyond the original concept and create something that felt much more like us. We became a full breakfast and lunch café, serving everything from our signature waffles and coffee drinks to breakfast burritos, sandwiches, salads, and more. But from the beginning, we wanted Morning Glory to be about more than what was on the menu.

Our faith has played a huge role in shaping the café and the way we operate it. Our motto is “Everyone’s welcome at our table,” and that really sums up what we hope people experience when they walk through our doors. We wanted to build a place centered around hospitality, fellowship, and community—a place where someone can come for breakfast or coffee but hopefully leave feeling a little more cared for than when they arrived.

Like any small business, the journey has come with plenty of learning, changes, challenges, and growing pains. We’ve had to adapt more times than we probably ever expected! But those experiences have also helped shape Morning Glory into what it is today.

Most recently, we’ve continued growing into catering and private events, which has opened another exciting chapter for us. Looking back at Short & Sweet and where we are now, the business looks very different, but the heart behind it really hasn’t changed. We still love feeding people, bringing people together, and creating something that feels special—and we’re incredibly grateful for the community that has allowed us to keep growing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road! Like most small businesses, we’ve faced rising costs, staffing challenges, long hours, and the learning curve that came with growing from a food trailer into a full brick-and-mortar café. Prior to opening, our family experienced a life-changing accident that completely altered our day-to-day lives and responsibilities, so there have certainly been seasons where simply continuing to move forward took a lot of faith and perseverance.

Through it all, our faith and our community have been what kept us going. We’ve learned to adapt, give ourselves grace, learn from our mistakes, and trust God with what comes next. The challenges have made us more resourceful and intentional about the kind of business we want Morning Glory to be, and they’ve made us even more grateful for how far we’ve come.

We’ve been impressed with Morning Glory Café , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Morning Glory Café is a locally owned breakfast and lunch café in downtown Newton, built around good food, genuine hospitality, and community. We serve everything from specialty coffee and our signature waffles to hearty breakfast and lunch favorites, but what we’re most known for is creating a place that feels warm, welcoming, and familiar. We’ve also expanded into catering and private events, allowing us to bring that same sense of hospitality outside the walls of the café to weddings, corporate events & more!

What I’m most proud of is that Morning Glory has developed an identity that goes beyond our menu. Our motto is “Everyone’s welcome at our table,” and we genuinely try to live that out. Our Christian faith is at the heart of our business, but our doors and our table are open to everyone. We want people to feel cared for here, whether they’re grabbing coffee on the way to work, sitting down for breakfast with their family, or trusting us to cater an important celebration. At the end of the day, we’re not trying to be the fanciest place in town; we want to be the place that feels like home.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve never really believed in luck, good or bad. I believe in God’s provision, His timing, and that even the difficult seasons can have purpose. There have been plenty of moments in both my life and business that I could easily label as “bad luck,” but looking back, I can see how many of those challenges redirected us, grew us, or opened doors we wouldn’t have otherwise considered.

The same is true of the good things. I don’t take them for granted or consider ourselves simply lucky. I’m incredibly grateful for every opportunity, every customer who supports us, and every door that has opened for Morning Glory. Our journey has required a lot of hard work and perseverance, but ultimately, I give God the glory for where we are and trust Him with where we’re going.
