Today we’d like to introduce you to Xero Sanders.
Xero, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My handyman journey started with a simple hammer and screwdriver. I used to be the default family furniture assembler and one day I saw an ad on Facebook for making money assembling furniture. Naturally I was curious and signed up for Handy for Pros (now called Angi Services) and started assembling furniture for other people. Over time I started buying more tools and learning how to do more things that were listed in the app. I had a few people asking for business cards to call me back personally as opposed to going through the app because they liked how I worked and got things done. So around December of 2020 is when I came up with the name, Project Driven, designed some business cards and started handing them out to each new and recurring client. I still serve quite a few of those clients today! It hasn’t been easy and I’ve had to keep at least a part time job to make ends meet throughout the almost 6 years I’ve been in business. Entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster.
I’ve gone from simple tools and no car, sometimes using my bike or longboard to get to clients if my mom couldn’t take me, to buying my first car, an array of power tools and hand tools, simple furniture to mounting TV’s which has become my specialty, building gazebos swing sets and sheds, learning car maintenance part time to work towards a different life goal, doing custom builds and my first thousand dollar job, to losing my first car, resurrecting the family SUV, working 3 jobs and finding time for clients, the family SUV breaking down again, to losing a storage unit full of tools and things, getting the best job I’ve ever had and now slowly rebuilding from there.
As I rebuild the business and reach goals I’ve always had for it I can set funds aside for future projects that more directly benefit the community and are purpose built to serve the community!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Consistency has always been the biggest challenge with this business, keeping a good flow of recurring clients and new clients keeping me busy and keeping money flowing in.
After that keeping business money in the business and the big reset of losing all those tools I had greatly decreased the amount and types of jobs I could take.
Now I’m just focusing on the basics of Furniture assembly, TV mounting and car maintenance to build up a sturdy foundation to build something new on.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Certified Mechanic full time and a part time Business Owner with an Interior decor/home improvement business. I specialize in routine maintenance and TV mounting. I’m well known in my community for being very good at all I do. I have a strong work ethic and am Driven to get Projects done right the first time. I take great pride in my work as both a Mechanic and Handyman. My drive and tenacity for doing things right is why people choose me, and the strong familial bonds I have with my clients, They’re more than just customers, they’re family. They trust me with their cars and homes and they believe in me and support the vision I have.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
The sheer amount of skills I have and actively utilize on a regular basis. I of course work on cars and home projects, but I also have a garden and grow food, build custom PCs, am a Photographer, Woodworker, Actor, I just recently started making music and much more.
I’m working in the background for something very special for the community, specifically artists of all kinds. I grew up around artists, I’m an artist, My mom is an artist, my closest friends are artists. Art is in my DNA and I have been thinking about what the artist community needs and has needed for forever.
