Hi Caleb, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I didn’t take the traditional path to getting where I am today. School was never my strong suit, and college wasn’t on the table for me. Instead, I focused on my core strengths: a drive to build, direct leadership, and a deep interest in business strategy. I was playing soccer overseas in Germany when I realized I was ready for a shift—I wanted to return home and build something truly impactful. Drawing on my background in high-level athletic competition and a deep interest in gaming, I co-founded North Carolina Esports Academy alongside my dad, who brought the financial backing to the table.
We opened our doors in October 2020—right in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic. Launching a community-driven venture during such an uncertain time was a baptism by fire, but it forced us to build a resilient, disciplined foundation from day one. We set out to solve a massive gap: transforming casual screen time into a structured, team-oriented athletic discipline for the younger generation.
I saw a massive gap in how competitive gaming was being structured for the younger generation. Kids were spending countless hours online, but there was a distinct lack of local, structured, community-driven environments that treated esports with the same discipline, coaching, and structure as traditional youth sports.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been anything but a smooth road. Navigating pandemic restrictions right out of the gate was tough, but the internal dynamics of the industry presented an even bigger test. Operating independently without outside capital meant every financial and strategic decision landed squarely on us. Along the way, dealing with bad actors and monopolistic tactics in the space taught me to pay attention when people show you who they really are.
Overcoming those hurdles required establishing strong boundaries, protecting our brand, and doubling down on integrity. Implementing strict financial discipline—like operating on the Profit First model—helped us cut through the noise, navigate scaling challenges, and build a lean, sustainable infrastructure built to last.
We’ve been impressed with North Carolina Esports Academy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
North Carolina Esports Academy is the only dedicated esports academy and gaming facility in the area. We bring the discipline, structure, and teamwork of traditional sports into the competitive gaming space through youth leagues, competitive coaching, camps, and local tournaments like the NC Esports Cup.
What sets us apart is our refusal to be just an “arcade.” We treat esports with true athletic standards, using competitive gaming as a vehicle to teach real-world life skills—communication, strategic thinking, leadership, and resilience.
I’m most proud of our independence and the inclusive community footprint we’ve created. We’ve built a top-tier space where local gamers finally have a place to belong, compete, and grow without compromising on standards or relying on outside investors.
