Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Jones.
Hi Julie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story is one of resilience, determination, faith, and learning that where we begin does not have to determine where we ultimately go.
I grew up facing circumstances that could easily have limited my expectations for the future. Family instability, financial hardship, and navigating life with a physical disability required me to become independent and resourceful at an early age. Those experiences taught me to adapt, persevere, and continue moving forward even when the path was uncertain.
That determination carried into my professional life. I built a career in human resources and organizational leadership with
global manufacturing companies including Rockwell Automation, Dover Corporation, and Kennametal, reaching the vice president level in my early forties. Throughout my career, I had the opportunity to lead large-scale organizational change, develop talent, build stronger cultures, and help businesses create long-term value.
In more recent years, my journey has taken another meaningful turn. I became the author of Beyond the Bluebird’s Shadow: A Memoir of Shattered Dreams and Resilience. Writing the book required me to revisit experiences I had spent much of my life moving beyond, but it also helped me recognize that some of the most difficult chapters of our lives can ultimately become a source of strength and purpose.
Today, I see a common thread through each stage of my life: the willingness to keep growing, embrace change, and believe that something meaningful can come from experiences we never would have chosen for ourselves.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my earliest challenges was learning to navigate the world as a person with a physical disability, after a childhood accident that resulted in partial amputation of my left arm. I understood from a young age that I might have to approach certain things differently, but I never wanted my disability to determine what I believed was possible for my life. It taught me adaptability and perhaps most importantly, how to find another way when the obvious path was not available.
Professionally, I also spent much of my career as a woman working in highly engineered, manufacturing-driven industries that were traditionally male dominated. Advancing into senior leadership meant learning how to establish credibility, speak with confidence, and contribute effectively in environments where I was often one of very few women in the room.
There were certainly moments when I had to work harder to demonstrate that I belonged there, but those experiences strengthened rather than diminished my determination.
I have learned that resilience is not about avoiding difficulty or pretending challenges do not affect us. It is about learning from setbacks, being willing to take risks, and continuing forward. Some of my greatest opportunities came from stepping into unfamiliar situations and trusting that I could learn what was needed along the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My professional career has centered on human resources, organizational leadership, and transformation within global manufacturing organizations.
Much of my work involved helping companies scale operations, manage risk, navigate complex change while preparing for future businesses growth. One initiative I led consolidated HR transactional activities across 37 countries into four regional shared-service centers, resulting in a 25 percent reduction in global HR headcount and approximately $3.3 million in savings.
At Dover Corporation, I served on a leadership team responsible for merging two businesses and establishing a new leadership structure and corporate culture. I also led an initiative to establish a global, company-wide talent-management system.
While I am proud of those measurable results, some of the work I value most involved developing people. I have always believed that a leader’s responsibility is not simply to deliver results, but also to create an environment where people can grow, contribute, and recognize their own potential.
Today, that work has expanded through my role as an author and speaker. Through Beyond the Bluebird’s Shadow, I now have the opportunity to speak with readers and groups about resilience, overcoming difficult beginnings, breaking generational patterns, and finding purpose in life experiences that once seemed only painful.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Perhaps the most important thing I would add is that I do not believe resilience belongs only to extraordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances.
Resilience is often built quietly, through the choices we make every day: choosing to continue when something is difficult, choosing to learn rather than be defeated by a setback, choosing to take a chance on ourselves, and sometimes choosing an entirely new direction when life does not unfold as we expected.
At different stages of my life, success has meant different things. At one point, it meant education, independence, and building a career. Later, it meant leading organizations, developing people, and making a meaningful contribution. Today, it also means using my experiences and my voice in ways that may encourage someone else.
If there is one message I hope women take from my story, it is that our circumstances, our differences, and even the difficult chapters of our past do not have to define the limits of our future. There can always be another chapter—and sometimes the one we never planned to write becomes the most meaningful of all.
