Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Garner.
Hi Anna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have loved all things fashion and design from a very young age, so when it was time to choose a college, I based my selections on schools with strong interior design programs. I studied Interior Design at Meredith College and decided to add an extra year to earn my MBA—something I had always wanted to pursue, especially because I knew I wanted to open my own business one day.
After graduating, I spent about three years working in high-end residential interior design in Raleigh. When I got engaged, my husband and I decided to move back east to New Bern, NC, to be closer to family. It was there that I took the leap and started Birdhouse Interiors, combining my love of design with my passion for creating a business of my own.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There is definitely a learning curve that comes with starting your own business, and at times, it can feel overwhelming. The easiest—and certainly the most fun—part is the actual design work, but there is so much more that goes into running a business than the creative side. You find yourself wearing so many different hats: accountant, social media manager, project manager, designer, and everything in between. Because of that, staying organized is incredibly important.
It isn’t always smooth sailing, but the creative freedom and flexibility that come with working for yourself make it all worth it. Building something of my own has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences, and ultimately, the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done.

Birdhouse Interiors is a full-service interior design firm specializing in residential and boutique commercial spaces. We guide our clients through every stage of the design process, from initial concept to final installation, creating spaces that are both beautiful and thoughtfully tailored to their individual needs.
What sets Birdhouse Interiors apart is our attention to detail and comprehensive, full-service approach. As a designer, I’m especially known for my use of color, pattern, and playful combinations that bring personality and character to each space.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I’ve found the interior design industry to be incredibly reliant on word of mouth, so when I ventured out to start my own business, I knew it was essential to strengthen my networking skills. Whether it’s building a relationship with a new client or connecting with a vendor, having the confidence to put yourself out there and meet new people is so important. You never know what opportunity might come from a simple conversation or connection.
This can sometimes be intimidating as a young entrepreneur, especially when you feel like you may not have a lot to bring to the table yet. But the more you put yourself in those situations, the more comfortable and confident you become. With time and practice, networking becomes a skill you continue to refine—and some of the most valuable relationships and opportunities can come from simply being willing to put yourself out there.
