Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Daulton.
Hi Jack, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a photographer. I was always sketching and drawing as a kid. I went to graphic design school for two semesters before college. That artistic passion of using line, shape and form still influences my photographic vision today. Inspired by nature, I started exploring landscapes in the 1990, especially in western NC. In 2005 I started traveling… really traveling… China, southeast Asia, Europe, Africa. The more remote the better. Then I had the opportunity to work with another photographer in a portrait studio for a few years. It was a good learning experience but the urge to explore the world with a camera was strong. Today I’m traveling more than ever. Photography helps me explore other lands and cultures. It feeds my soul.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest obstacle was myself. Self doubt, financial worries. But that’s a waste of energy. We get one shot at this. Explore with respect. Create with kindness. Do what you like. Feed your soul. Have fun. That’s it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As with any creative, my focus and vision has grown and changed over the years. I’ve done everything from studio portraiture to weddings to selling large fine-art prints of subjects ranging from landscapes to old boats in Vietnam. I’m fortunate now to be able to focus primarily on my travel and nature photography.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Start out small and follow your passion. Seek out other artists or creatives nearby that work in your medium. Take a class. Join a camera club, a pottery group, a painters guild, a writer’s club. Volunteer to help at a local arts council. Be open and things will blossom from those connections.
