Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Weinstein-Bacal.
Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been in the vintage industry for longer than I’d like to admit, but when my husband and I first moved to Durham, I started selling some of my collection on my front patio on Washington st. during the farmers market, creating sidewalk chalk fliers to draw in attention. It was going so well, that when we were planning to move to a different neighborhood, I wanted to figure out a way to keep doing it while supporting other local sellers. I started Thrift-A-Bull Market in 2023 at Surf Club to do just that. I was then approached to open a shop in East Durham. Opening And/Also Vintage Boutique has always been a dream, but when someone comes to you specifically because of your passion for local business and second hand, as well as your personal style and curatorial tastes, how could you say ‘no?’
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a mostly smooth road; the community has been so supportive, from regulars at Thrift-A-Bull Market who are now regulars at AndAlso Vintage, to the vendors who’ve participated in the market and are endless sources of encouraging for me, to the actual community essentially inviting us into their space. Opening a business is always hard, but it would’ve been a lot harder to do without all the support and enthusiasm I have gotten along the way!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’re bringing Durham, North Carolina a highly curated, ever-evolving selection of vintage, designer and unique unisex clothing, accessories and small housewares. We have a wide variety of designer and highly collectable pieces ranging from the 1800s to now, as well as a rotation of featured local artists and makers from Durham and the surrounding area.
Having style doesn’t have to be expensive but it doesn’t mean that you want to spend hours digging, either. We want to hit the nexus between beautiful, quality and affordable clothing and meticulous curation. We have an impeccable selection without being overwhelming.
Located in East Durham, we aim to create a sense of community through collaboration with our neighboring businesses and local creatives. We host workshops, trunk shows and are planning on adding so much more to the roster in upcoming months!
