Today we’d like to introduce you to Autumn Cohen.
Hi Autumn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a mom of three, but I don’t look like it. In my day-to-day life, I take my two daughters to school and activities. But in March of 2020, I delivered my stillborn son. It was just a few days after a normal 37-week prenatal check up. Baby Bash is my why. I created a baby memorial journal to help parents like me grieve their sweet babies gone-too-soon.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Grief has been a tricky thing to navigate. I am lucky enough to raise my living children, but all while holding my son in my heart. I really needed a creative outlet and to find community. Honestly, when you have a stillborn, you feel like you are the only person in the world that this has happened to. At least that is how I felt.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In the early days of my grief, I started to mail birthday cards to baby loss parents, celebrating their babies when others often times forgot or were apprehensive about bringing up their loss. I soon started creating a prompted journal called, “In Memory of You.” I had the support from the baby loss community on Instagram and they really helped me through the creation of the book. I would often post stories and have everyone pick their favorite fonts, designs, wording, etc. It was really rewarding to see everyone working together towards this project. This book created a sense of community I was looking for and I’m forever thankful. It helped me start my healing journey. The success of the journal always has me in torn though, knowing that people need this book because they’ve lost a baby like I have. It’s never something to celebrate. But, I’m learning that we can slowly heal together.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I am not the first person in the baby loss community. I’d love to share some accounts with you that I found helpful. First of all, @organgeafphotos aka Junie’s mama captured beautiful photos of the book. Instagram accounts to follow as a loss parent include: @thekiddosdiaries (they are local to us!) @measuretheplacenta & @pushpregancy. Also, our very own @nicoletrebourphotography of Raleigh captured my author photos. That day felt surreal, in most of the photos an orb was present. It felt like a love note from Bash!!
